Job description

Position Overview:
Attain the highest level of customer relations, expedite the processing of prescriptions and help to maintain the non-prescription aspects of the pharmacy department. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required (PTCB)
Detailed Description of Duties:
  • All functions of duties of the certified pharmacy technician shall be performed under the direct supervision of the pharmacist on duty. The pharmacist on duty will be working in close proximity with the certified pharmacy technician to ensure adequate control or supervision and shall verify and document certified pharmacy technician work.
  • The primary purpose of the certified pharmacy technician is to expedite the processing of prescriptions. The key to productivity is the ability of the certified pharmacy technician to initiate the necessary procedure to start the process of filling the prescription. Therefore, the certified pharmacy technician needs to be organized.
  • Listed are the duties to be performed by the certified pharmacy technician. NOTE: The primary duties involve the preparatory functions that need to be accomplished in order for the pharmacist to fill the prescription.
    • A. Receive new prescriptions from the customers at the pharmacy for filling. When receiving a new prescription from the customer, the certified pharmacy technician shall verify the name, address, and birth date of the person for whom the prescription is to be filled. The certified pharmacy technician shall also verify the prescriber's name (if illegible).
    • B. Obtain from the customer the drug name or Rx number of the prescription(s) that needs to be refilled.
    • C. Enter the appropriate information into the computer in order to process the new or refilled prescriptions.
    • D. Enter the appropriate information into the computer in order to process electronic third party claims for payment by insurance companies for prescriptions.
    • E. Retrieve appropriate medication(s) from stock.
    • F. Scan the stock bottle to ensure correct medication and print prescription label.
    • G. Count tablets/capsules or pour liquids in appropriate quantities.
    • H. Place medications in appropriate container(s) and affix prescription labels.
    • I. Affix appropriate auxiliary labels.
    • J. Assist the pharmacist in preparing and reconstituting medications.
    • K. Answer the telephone and direct calls to the pharmacist (where appropriate) such as, but may not be limited to, the following:
      • New Presctiptions
      • Medical Questions
      • Judgmental Decisions
    • Accommodate the customers when they arrive at the pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions. This shall entail giving the prescription to the customer, as well as, the necessary cash register transaction for both new and refill prescriptions.
    • Be involved in the following functions that are not directly related to the actual filing of prescriptions:
      • A. Completion and processing of third-party documents
      • B. Organization and filing of new prescriptions and patient profiles.
      • C. Restocking and reordering supplies when necessary. Supplies may include vials, bags, printer labels and paper.
      • D. Manage inventory as follows: Receive drug order from wholesaler, sticker items and restock shelves, determining the ordered items were shipped, determining that shipped items are the same as the invoiced items, and report shorts to wholesaler for credit and backordered items to pharmacist per department policy.
      • E. Clean pharmacy shelves and work areas and maintain pharmacy in a satisfactory state of cleanliness.
      • F. Check inventory for appropriate "shelf life" remaining before expiration, pull expired or nearly expired items, catalog expired items, and return items to appropriate company for credit.
      • G. Assist the pharmacist by reordering items, ordering new items as needed and shorted and backordered items. Communicate with the pharmacist and / or customer about item availability, when necessary.
      • H. Communication via telephone with support companies, including but not limited to, third party insurance companies, wholesale companies, and software and hardware vendors.
    • Communicate with pharmacy manager on progress and policies of pharmacy department.
    • Consult regularly with the pharmacy manager or staff pharmacist for the purpose of expediting the processing of prescriptions.
    • Maintain good company loyalty, set a good example, and project a healthy positive attitude.
    • Maintain highest level of customer relations.
    • Carry out daily housekeeping, cleanliness and sanitation programs as established within company guidelines.
    • Maintain a high level of professionalism, consistent with company standards, in dress, personal appearance and grooming.
    • Adhere to cash register policies as set forth by the company.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Expedite the processing of prescriptions by performing all duties necessary and allowable, by policy or law, in the preparation necessary prior to the filling of the prescriptions by thepharmacist and in the distribution of the prescription to the patient, once all necessary dispensing duties are performed by the pharmacist.
  • Communicate with pharmacy manager on progress and policies of pharmacy department.
  • Consult regularly with the pharmacy manager or staff pharmacist for the purpose of expediting the processing of prescriptions.
  • Maintain good company loyalty, set a good example, and project a healthy positive attitude.
  • Maintain highest level of customer relations.
  • Carry out daily housekeeping, cleanliness and sanitation programs as established within company guidelines.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism, consistent with company standards, in dress, personal appearance and grooming.
