Your Opportunity
The role of a Structural CAD Manager is to work with the structure discipline team leadership and project managers to continually monitor and improve overall drawing deliverable production standards and quality. A Structural CAD Manager will perform a variety of tasks which may include CAD team leadership, quality control, management of templates / standards, teaching, supervisory duties, in addition to assisting with the preparation of deliverables for own projects within the bridge sector.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Create, maintain and edit design drawings and construction plans for transportation structures as required utilizing MicroStation software package
  • Preparing high quality plans by utilizing engineering calculations, notes, sketches, etc. as prepared by engineers; using geometry and structural components for accurate descriptions of components and completed structures.
  • Providing clear and detailed plan preparation work, compliant with accepted design/drafting standards of the client including manuals, standard figures and plans, or other resources.
  • Understands the terminology, technology, and other concepts related to structural engineering and construction practices. Applies this understanding to the process of structure layout, concrete reinforcing and structural steel detailing.
  • Oversees and coordinates CAD modelling / production team during development and production of structure deliverables. This includes staff resource allocations & reallocations over the course of projects / pursuits.
  • Coordinates CAD modelling / production team with other disciplines / consultants / subconsultants during projects / pursuits.
  • Coordinates, tracks and logs QA/QC and design decision related documentation for project deliverables - carefully following both Stantec and client quality requirements. This may include performing regular quality reviews of CAD models / drawings.
  • Conducts regular CAD staff work assignment meetings and technical CAD workshops / sessions for CAD staff. Also, encourages other CAD staff to present CAD related topics at these meetings for good engagement.
  • Remains aware of new CAD technology, trends, tools and practices in the industry through reading technical articles and attending occasional workshops & seminars.
  • Regularly reviews and is familiar with CAD standards of both Stantec and Stantec's clients.
  • Responsible for managing and regularly maintaining a functional library of CAD standards documents, templates, sample drawings / details and other supporting files which correspond to Stantec's and clients' CAD standards.
  • Conducts standard supervisor responsibilities for CAD staff such as checking and approving time sheets, performing annual performance reviews, and establishing and reviewing annual CAD staff goal setting.
  • Assists with identifying and coordinating software training for CAD staff when required. This includes self-guided web-based training as well as formal in class training.
  • Assists Stantec IT with monitoring CAD staff hardware and software inventory and advises CAD staff when new software updates and roll outs are required.
  • Maintains Stantec in house training requirements for supervisors.
  • Occasionally develops new CAD standards - including guidelines documents, templates, sample drawings and supporting files - for new projects / pursuits. These may be similar to Stantec or client standards.
  • Occasionally maintains project CAD-related data on Stantec project servers or web-based platforms over the course of projects / pursuits.
  • Oversees / coordinates final archiving of CAD, model and other design related documents / files at the completion of projects / pursuits.
  • Assists CAD staff with CAD file / model troubleshooting when required
  • Provides active mentoring to CAD staff within department.

Qualifications

  • Strong ability to effectively identify and discuss project issues within Project Teams and at times in front of Clients and stakeholders as required on a project-by-project basis.

  • Understanding of project scoping, task identification and resource assignments, scheduling, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
  • Willingness to provide mentoring and share technical knowledge with junior designers to support the growth and technical excellence of the team.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable design guidelines and codes for relevant jurisdictions.
  • Ability and understanding to work with direct reports to set career goals and support progress to achieving them.
  • Strong understanding and proficiency in the use of relevant design software, which includes MicroStation and ProjectWise. Good understanding of AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Proficient skills in Bluebeam Revu, MS Word and Excel, and Adobe PDF
  • Strong eye for detail and understanding of quality management systems.

Education and Experience
  • An Engineering Design and Drafting Diploma or similar.
  • A minimum of 10 years of civil/structural engineering drafting of bridges and other transportation structures.

About the Team
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
