Figma Designer information

What is a Figma designer?

A Figma Designer is a professional who specializes in using Figma, a collaborative web-based design tool, to create user interfaces, prototypes, and design systems for digital products such as websites and mobile apps. They work closely with product managers, developers, and other designers to visualize concepts, design user experiences, and ensure design consistency. Figma Designers leverage the platform's collaborative features to streamline feedback and iterate designs efficiently. Their expertise includes UI/UX principles, prototyping, and often some knowledge of front-end development.

How does a Figma designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

As a Figma Designer, you will regularly collaborate with product managers, developers, and other designers to ensure cohesive and efficient design implementation. This often involves participating in design sprints, sharing prototypes for feedback, and conducting handoff meetings where detailed design specs are communicated to developers. Figma’s real-time collaboration features make it easy to gather input and iterate quickly, but it also means strong communication and flexibility are key to success. Expect to attend regular stand-ups, design reviews, and brainstorming sessions to align your work with the broader team’s objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Figma designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Figma Designer, you need strong expertise in UI/UX design principles, visual design, and a portfolio demonstrating hands-on experience with digital products. Proficiency in Figma itself, as well as familiarity with design systems, prototyping tools, and sometimes basic front-end technologies, is essential. Excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These abilities ensure that designs are not only visually appealing but also user-centered, functional, and efficiently integrated into modern product development workflows.

Job description

Description:

Invariant seeks a Graphic Designer to join our growing Strategic Communications and Public Affairs team. This is a mid-level, production-focused role for an experienced designer who can work independently, move quickly from brief to execution, and manage a high volume of work across multiple clients and internal initiatives.

Our clients range from well-known Fortune 500 companies to disruptive start-ups, and our work spans public affairs, policy, corporate communications, and advocacy. The deliverable mix is broad and changes week to week—from presentation decks and social content to print ads, one-pagers, reports, and brand identities.

As our team grows, we are seeking a versatile designer who takes pride in clean, precise work, thrives in a fast-moving environment, and can work effectively across multiple brands and projects simultaneously. The ideal candidate understands how to work within established brand systems while also helping evolve them and can collaborate seamlessly with account teams, clients, and other non-designers.

What you’ll do

  • Design and produce client-facing materials across a wide variety of digital and print formats, including:
  • Presentation decks and deck redesigns
  • Social media graphics
  • Digital and print advertising
  • One-pagers, fact sheets, reports, and other collateral
  • Event invitations, signage, and environmental graphics
  • Logo refreshes and brand identity materials
  • Develop internal marketing and communications assets for channels including LinkedIn and Substack, as well as election, policy, and other thought-leadership content.
  • Support new business proposals, pitch decks, and the continued rollout of Invariant’s brand.
  • Translate designs from Figma into PowerPoint and Google Slides for client-facing deliverables.
  • Work within multiple client brand systems simultaneously, maintaining consistency while adapting designs across different formats and contexts.
  • Manage production work from brief through delivery, asking clear questions upfront and proactively communicating timelines or potential issues.
  • Support the creative team with production overflow, Figma file organization, and asset management across Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Collaborate directly with account teams, clients, and other departments to translate communications objectives into effective creative.
  • Stay current on emerging design, digital, and visual communications trends.

Who you are

  • 3-6 years of relevant graphic design experience, ideally in an agency, in-house communications, public affairs, or similarly fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Figma, including experience with component libraries, auto-layout, and brand systems.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Comfortable translating Figma designs into PowerPoint and Google Slides.
  • Strong understanding of typography, hierarchy, grid systems, and layout, particularly for copy-heavy materials such as decks, reports, and one-pagers.
  • Experienced working within established brand systems and applying brand standards consistently across different formats.
  • Comfortable managing a high volume of work, competing priorities, and fast turnarounds across multiple clients or brands.
  • Able to take a brief and execute independently with strong attention to detail and minimal oversight.
  • Strong communicator who asks thoughtful questions, sets expectations clearly, and flags issues proactively.
  • Highly organized in both project management and file management.

Motion graphics or video editing experience in Premiere, After Effects, or similar software is a plus, as is experience with HTML or email templates, photography editing and art direction, and project management platforms such as Basecamp. Familiarity with political, policy, communications, or public affairs environments is also a plus.

The ideal candidate will be based in Washington, DC, or New York City. Salary range is $85,000 – $100,000 commensurate with experience. The firm offers unlimited vacation time, generous health care and retirement benefits, and advancement opportunities.
