Job description

Hammond Upper and Middle School seek part-time talented, experienced tutors in all subject areas for students from 5th through 12th grades. An Academic Center for Excellence Tutor is responsible for supporting students by providing academic and/or organizational enrichment to help students excel. Tutoring sessions are meant to supplement classroom instruction, and tutors partner actively with classroom teachers to better support students. Tutoring sessions are often one-on-one and can also include small groups when desired. Our ACE team offers compassionate, motivating assistance to students, and we expect our tutors to do the same.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Meet with students on Hammond's campus during school hours or immediately after school
  • Work through concepts of academic need by asking students about specific topics or subject areas that are giving them trouble or that warrant further exploration
  • Provide academic support through homework or test review (letting the student lead)
  • Utilize appropriate and proven study methods to prepare for upcoming assessments
  • Help students develop study skills and organizational techniques to improve their academic performance
  • Complete progress notes after each session to discuss what was accomplished and further goals
  • Communicate with teachers about specific skills and curricula
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about areas for support when needed

Job Qualifications:
  • Minimum Education Requirements: High School diploma
  • Ability to develop positive rapport with middle and high school students
  • Established proficiency in relevant subject matter
  • Hours are relatively flexible, but must be able to maintain a consistent schedule with a student

Reporting:
  • ACE Tutors reports to the ACE Coordinator
