How much do fifo mechanic jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for fifo mechanic in the United States is $24.81, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fifo Mechanic position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FIFO Mechanic, you need strong mechanical aptitude, diagnostic abilities, and trade certification (such as a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology or Heavy Diesel Fitting). Experience using technical diagnostic tools, hydraulic systems, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is highly valued, along with safety certifications like Working at Heights or Confined Spaces. Effective communication, problem-solving skills, and adaptability are important soft skills, especially given the remote and team-based FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) environment. These competencies ensure equipment reliability, safe operations, and efficient teamwork in challenging and isolated work sites.

What is a FIFO Mechanic job?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) Mechanic is a skilled technician who travels to remote locations, typically on a rotating schedule, to maintain and repair machinery, vehicles, or equipment. These roles are common in industries like mining, oil and gas, and construction, where operations are located far from major cities. FIFO Mechanics work shifts that can range from a few days to several weeks, followed by a scheduled period of leave. This arrangement allows employers to staff remote sites without requiring employees to relocate permanently.

What is a typical roster and work environment like for a FIFO Mechanic?

FIFO Mechanics usually work on a roster system, such as two weeks on and one week off, with shifts that can be long and physically demanding. The work is often performed at remote mining or industrial sites, where mechanics are provided accommodation and meals during their rotation. The environment is highly safety-focused, and you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting heavy equipment maintenance. While the job requires independence, there are also opportunities to collaborate closely with other trades, supervisors, and site management. This setup allows for concentrated work periods followed by significant time off, appealing to those seeking work-life balance while gaining exposure to large-scale operations.
