What is a fieldwork assistant?

Fieldwork Assistants are professionals who support researchers, scientists, or project managers in collecting data, conducting surveys, and performing other hands-on tasks in outdoor or on-site environments. Their responsibilities often include setting up equipment, taking measurements, recording observations, and ensuring that data collection follows established protocols. Fieldwork Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of field projects, making them valuable members of research and environmental teams.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fieldwork assistant?

To thrive as a Fieldwork Assistant, you need strong observational, data collection, and organizational skills, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework in environmental science, biology, or a related field. Familiarity with data entry software, GPS devices, and field sampling equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, safety, and smooth collaboration in dynamic outdoor environments.

What challenges do fieldwork assistants face in outdoor data collection, and how can they prepare for them?

Fieldwork Assistants often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather, difficult terrain, and equipment malfunctions during outdoor data collection. To prepare, it's important to dress appropriately, carry backup supplies, and familiarize yourself with the equipment before heading into the field. Strong communication skills and adaptability are key, as you'll often need to coordinate with team members and troubleshoot unexpected issues on site. Being proactive and maintaining a flexible mindset can help you overcome these obstacles and contribute effectively to the research team's goals.

This is an exciting opportunity for a construction professional with a strong mix of civil infrastructure and building construction experience, ideally gained on a transit station, rail, LRT, subway, or transportation infrastructure project.
The successful candidate will bring 5+ years of construction experience and have a proven ability to coordinate field operations, manage subcontractors, maintain schedule and productivity targets, and champion a culture of safety and quality. • Coordinate and oversee civil construction activities including earthworks, grading, drainage, storm, sanitary, and watermain installations.
  • Support the execution and coordination of structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical scopes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead daily foreman coordination meetings to align crews, subcontractors, logistics, and work sequencing.
  • Monitor daily productivity, installed quantities, labour, equipment utilization, and progress against schedule.
  • Develop and maintain three-week look-ahead schedules while proactively identifying and resolving workflow constraints.
  • Coordinate site logistics, access, deliveries, and staging activities to maintain productivity and minimize disruptions.
  • Ensure all construction activities are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, schedules, and methodologies.
  • Promote Ledcor's safety culture and ensure compliance with all corporate, project-specific, and regulatory safety requirements.
  • Lead daily safety meetings and support the preparation and implementation of FLHAs, JHAs, Work Plans, and Safe Work Procedures.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance and compliance with quality, safety, schedule, and contractual requirements.
  • Support the implementation of Quality Programs, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and project documentation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records including daily reports, site photos, quantity tracking, field changes, and productivity metrics to support forecasting, cost control, and change management.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with project teams, clients, consultants, suppliers, and other key stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • 5-10+ years of construction experience with a combination of civil infrastructure and building construction projects.
  • Experience in a Field Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent role.
  • Previous experience on a transit station, rail, LRT, subway, transportation, or major infrastructure project is strongly preferred.
  • Direct transit station construction experience and familiarity with Metrolinx projects and requirements are considered strong assets.

  • Experience with look-ahead planning, productivity tracking, quantity reporting, and schedule management.
  • Working knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and quality management systems and best practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with scheduling and construction management software.
  • Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
