Fieldwork Assistant information

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fieldwork assistant?

To thrive as a Fieldwork Assistant, you need strong observational, data collection, and organizational skills, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework in environmental science, biology, or a related field. Familiarity with data entry software, GPS devices, and field sampling equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate data collection, safety, and smooth collaboration in dynamic outdoor environments.

What is a fieldwork assistant?

Fieldwork Assistants are professionals who support researchers, scientists, or project managers in collecting data, conducting surveys, and performing other hands-on tasks in outdoor or on-site environments. Their responsibilities often include setting up equipment, taking measurements, recording observations, and ensuring that data collection follows established protocols. Fieldwork Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of field projects, making them valuable members of research and environmental teams.

What challenges do fieldwork assistants face in outdoor data collection, and how can they prepare for them?

Fieldwork Assistants often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather, difficult terrain, and equipment malfunctions during outdoor data collection. To prepare, it's important to dress appropriately, carry backup supplies, and familiarize yourself with the equipment before heading into the field. Strong communication skills and adaptability are key, as you'll often need to coordinate with team members and troubleshoot unexpected issues on site. Being proactive and maintaining a flexible mindset can help you overcome these obstacles and contribute effectively to the research team's goals.

Job description

Soar Autism Center is building a network of interdisciplinary clinics where children with autism and their families receive life-shaping services that support them to thrive. We prioritize early intervention, comprehensive supportive services, and positive, developmentally-appropriate learning that meets the needs of each unique child and family. Specifically, we focus on integrated autism care and a play-based model of ABA therapy based on the principles of the Early Start Denver Model. Join an innovative organization reinventing the autism therapy experience for children and families.
Compensation and role design:
The Fieldwork Supervisor role is built for BCBAs who are passionate about mentorship, clinical coaching, and developing the next generation of behavior analysts. In this role, you will help Case Supervisors (practicum/fieldwork students) grow into confident, thoughtful, and well-prepared future BCBAs by providing hands-on supervision, structured feedback, and real-time clinical coaching.
  • Base pay: $100,500.00 - $105,000.00/year. Annual performance bonus potential up to $5,000. Additional compensation beyond the range for achieving clinical certifications.
  • Bonus: Up to $10,000 sign on bonus, based on start date and location.
  • Hybrid: 1 work-from-home day per week for each Fieldwork Supervisor (BCBA)
  • Support and training: The Fieldwork Supervisor (BCBA) owns the coaching and mentorship of up to 4 Case Supervisors as they build clinical decision-making skills and prepare for the BCBA exam. This is a hands-on leadership role for a BCBA who wants to develop other clinicians, not a caseload-first position.
  • Clinical growth: Multiple paths to grow as a BCBA including center/regional leadership and specialized roles
  • Culture that lives out our Values: High Expectations that raise the bar, Collaboration that brings us together as one team, and Fun you can feel the moment you walk into our centers

What you will be doing:
  • Coach and mentor up to 4 Case Supervisors as they grow their clinical and decision-making skills, with a focus on BCBA exam preparation and role readiness
  • Provide weekly hours of billable supervision focused Case Supervisor coaching and development for the clients on their caseload
  • Hold a small caseload of clients, as needed, depending on the Case Supervisor staffing at the center
  • Design and implement individualized, naturalistic ABA for children ages 2-6 in a center-based setting
  • Collaborate with a dynamic interdisciplinary clinical team (SLP, OT, psychology, developmental pediatrics) on assessments and integrated treatment plans
  • Use ESDM-informed strategies (we provide training, ESDM experience not required)
  • Assist the Clinical Trainer in organizing and hosting quarterly, center-level continuing education events for BCBAs and RBTs
  • Achieve ESDM certification within 2 years of starting your role

What we offer:
  • Implement a unique model of ABA therapy! Learn a play-based form of ABA therapy for young kids, the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). You'll receive training, continuing education, and work with national experts on ESDM implementation. Soar also covers the cost of ESDM certification for interested clinicians
  • Real multidisciplinary collaboration! Work closely with other BCBAs, speech, occupational therapy, psychology, and developmental pediatrics in our center via client overlaps and weekly interdisciplinary care meetings.
  • Opportunities for career advancement as a BCBA with a deep focus on clinical quality
  • Work in a values-driven environment that deeply cares about doing high-quality, ethical work
  • A culture that cares about you! Shout outs, boo yahs, and staff appreciations for your hard work
  • Great company benefits - Quality medical, dental, and vision plans
  • A company 401K with company contribution
  • 11 company holidays plus 15 additional days off
  • Short term disability for all staff covered by Soar

What you have:
  • Minimum of a master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, or a related field
  • LBA in Arizona
  • Preferred candidates have a background in child development, early childhood education, or a related field
  • 2 or more years of experience as Board Certified Behavior Analyst
  • ABA early intervention experience
  • A mission driven nature that is deeply focused on care quality for kids
  • Strong desire to work with clients ages 2- 6
  • Clear professional communication, both verbally and in writing
  • Fluency in navigating devices such as computers and tablets
  • Embodiment of Soar's Core Values: High expectations, Belonging, Trust, Collaboration, Continuous Improvement, and Fun

Soar Autism Center is committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels.
