How much do field welding engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for field welding engineer in the United States is $34.09, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $40.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Field Welding Engineers on construction sites?

Field Welding Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting welding procedures to variable site conditions, ensuring strict compliance with safety and quality standards, and coordinating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. They must also troubleshoot unexpected issues, like changing weather or material inconsistencies, which can impact welding performance. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are vital for overcoming these hurdles and delivering successful project outcomes.

What does a Field Welding Engineer do?

A Field Welding Engineer is responsible for overseeing welding operations on construction sites or in field environments, ensuring that welding activities meet safety, quality, and engineering standards. They develop welding procedures, inspect welds, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate with project managers and welders to ensure project requirements are met. Field Welding Engineers also ensure compliance with industry codes and client specifications and may provide training or technical support to welding teams.

What is the difference between Field Welding Engineer vs Welding Supervisor?

AspectField Welding EngineerWelding Supervisor
CertificationsASME, AWS certifications, welding codesOften holds similar certifications, plus supervisory training
Work EnvironmentOn-site, in the field, overseeing welding processesOn-site or plant, managing welding teams and schedules
ResponsibilitiesEnsuring welding quality, technical support, complianceManaging welding crews, workflow, safety, and productivity

The main difference is that a Field Welding Engineer focuses on technical welding quality and compliance in the field, providing expert support, while a Welding Supervisor manages the welding team and daily operations. Both roles require similar certifications and work in similar environments, but their primary focus differs—technical oversight versus team management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Field Welding Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Welding Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, welding processes, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree in welding engineering or a related field. Familiarity with welding codes (such as ASME and AWS), non-destructive testing methods, and CAD software is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). Outstanding problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you address on-site challenges and coordinate with diverse teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring structural integrity, safety compliance, and successful project delivery in demanding field environments.
