Field Recording information

What is a field recording?

A Field Recording job involves capturing environmental and location-based sounds outside of a controlled studio setting. This can include nature sounds, urban ambiences, wildlife, and specific sound effects used in film, television, music, and game production. Field recordists use specialized microphones and recording equipment to ensure high-quality audio captures in various environments. The role requires technical expertise, a keen ear for sound details, and often travel to diverse locations to collect unique audio samples.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in field recording?

To thrive in Field Recording, you should possess strong audio engineering knowledge, proficiency in sound equipment, and an understanding of acoustics and environmental factors, typically supported by experience in audio production or a related field. Familiarity with portable recording devices, high-quality microphones, and audio editing software such as Pro Tools or Adobe Audition is essential. Attention to detail, adaptability, and excellent communication skills are crucial when working in diverse environments and coordinating with teams or clients. These skills enable high-quality sound capture and effective collaboration, which are vital for producing professional field recordings in varied and often challenging settings.

What are some common challenges faced in the field recording profession, and how can they be managed?

Field recording professionals often encounter unpredictable conditions, such as weather changes, background noise, and varying acoustic environments, which can impact sound quality. To manage these challenges, field recordists must be skilled in using windshields, shock mounts, and choosing the right microphones for specific locations. Being prepared with backup equipment and scouting locations in advance can also help reduce technical issues. Teamwork and clear communication with other crew members, such as directors or technicians, ensure a smooth recording process and help overcome any unexpected obstacles on-site. Staying adaptable and maintaining a problem-solving mindset are key to succeeding in this dynamic role.

Working closely with the Farm Manager, this role leads field crews, coordinates production activities, monitors crop performance, and ensures safe, efficient operations that meet quality, food safety, and production standards.

This position supports primarily outdoor farming operations in Florida or Tennessee, including outdoor hoop house/high tunnel production in Florida.

  • Supervise, schedule, and direct field crews to meet production and harvest goals.
  • Monitor crop growth, plant health, irrigation, and field conditions, identifying issues and recommending corrective actions.
  • Support fertility, pest, disease, and weed management programs in collaboration with farm leadership.
  • Oversee harvesting activities to ensure product quality, yield, and operational efficiency.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate employees on safe work practices, harvesting techniques, and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain accurate labor, production, and field records using company systems and required documentation.
  • Communicate daily with Farm Managers, Harvest Supervisors, and cross-functional teams to execute production plans.
  • Ensure compliance with GAP, GMP, food safety, customer, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and audit-ready work areas.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and safety.

Qualifications

  • Experience in commercial outdoor vegetable or leafy greens production preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze field conditions and make sound operational decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and electronic recordkeeping systems.
  • Knowledge of GAP, GMP, food safety, and workplace safety standards.
  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform the physical demands of commercial farming.
