What does a field project manager do?

A Field Project Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating projects at job sites, ensuring that work is completed safely, on time, and within budget. They manage teams, allocate resources, and serve as the primary point of contact between the office and field operations. Their duties often include scheduling, quality control, safety compliance, and problem-solving to address any issues that arise during the project. Effective communication and leadership skills are essential for this role.

How does a field project manager typically balance on-site responsibilities with administrative tasks?

Field Project Managers often split their time between the project site and the office, managing both hands-on coordination and essential paperwork. On-site, they oversee project progress, address unforeseen challenges, and coordinate with crews and subcontractors. Off-site or in the office, they handle budgeting, scheduling, reporting, and client communications. Efficient time management and clear delegation are key to ensuring both aspects are handled effectively, supporting project goals and team cohesion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, industry-specific knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Procore), budgeting tools, and safety compliance certifications like OSHA are often required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills that set top candidates apart. These skills and qualifications are vital for coordinating teams, meeting project deadlines, and ensuring successful project delivery in dynamic field environments.

Type: Full-time (exempt)

About the job:

We are seeking a dynamic Construction Project Manager to oversee large residential developments, including single-family homes, townhomes, and low to mid-rise multi-family projects. The successful candidate will spearhead projects from pre-construction engineering through completion and quality assurance, ensuring adherence to schedule, budget, and quality standards.

We are seeking individuals who are not only proficient in project management but also possess a forward-thinking mindset and a passion for building and improving processes. Geothermal experience is a plus but not mandatory; however, construction management experience is essential.

The role demands strong financial acumen, subcontractor management skills, and the ability to travel as needed. This is an opportunity to join a growing team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our department. This position will report to the Director of Project Management.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead pre-construction engineering efforts, including logistical planning, subcontracting, design work, and value engineering.

  • Oversee project execution, including scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, safety compliance, and quality control/Assurance.

  • Manage subcontractor relationships, ensuring timely delivery of services, adherence to project specifications, and nurturing a collaborative professional partnership.

  • Drive project progress through effective communication, coordination, and conflict resolution.

  • Utilize project management software to track project milestones, budgets, and documentation.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline processes and optimize project efficiency.

  • Implement and maintain quality assurance measures to uphold project standards and meet client expectations.

  • Actively participate in the development and enhancement of departmental tools, processes, and best practices.

  • Contribute to the growth and development of the role by providing insights, feedback, and innovative solutions.

You will thrive in this role if you have:
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines.

  • Passion for being on site and leading field crews, inspiring teams, and driving execution in the field.

Must-haves:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field. Master's degree is a plus.

  • 1-4 years experience in project management within the construction industry, preferably in residential developments.

  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies, building codes, and industry regulations.

  • Proficiency in project management software, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite. Procore and Salesforce experience is highly desirable.

  • Willingness to travel as required for project site visits and meetings (~50% on-site, with occasional out-of-state flights)
