What is a field piping designer?

Field Piping Designers are professionals responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the installation of piping systems in industrial settings such as oil refineries, chemical plants, and power plants. They create detailed drawings and layouts for piping systems, ensuring that they meet safety, regulatory, and functional requirements. Field Piping Designers work closely with engineers, construction teams, and project managers to address on-site challenges, make modifications as needed, and ensure seamless integration of piping systems. Their role is critical in ensuring that piping installations are efficient, safe, and compliant with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a field piping designer?

To thrive as a Field Piping Designer, you need a strong background in piping design principles, drafting, and familiarity with industry standards, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical diploma. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SmartPlant), isometric drawing tools, and piping design codes is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you coordinate with engineers, clients, and construction teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient piping system layouts in complex field environments.

What are some common challenges faced by field piping designers when working on-site, and how can they be managed?

Field Piping Designers often face challenges such as coordinating with construction teams, dealing with unexpected site conditions, and updating designs based on real-time changes. Communication is key—designers need to work closely with engineers, project managers, and contractors to ensure that any modifications are accurately documented and implemented. Flexibility and problem-solving skills are essential, as field conditions may require quick adjustments to piping layouts or routing. Utilizing digital tools like 3D modeling software can also help streamline updates and improve collaboration on-site.

What is the difference between Field Piping Designer vs Piping Designer?

Senior Piping Designer

Play an integral role in Worley’s Mechanical and Piping team, supporting the delivery of complex power generation, industrial, energy, and infrastructure projects across North America. As industries continue to modernise and invest in operational reliability, efficiency, and sustainability, you will contribute to the development of high-quality piping and facility designs that support safe, constructable, and cost-effective project execution.

Based in Denver, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams on projects ranging from brownfield facility upgrades to large-scale capital developments. Through technical expertise, innovation, and collaboration, you will help customers solve complex design challenges while supporting operational excellence and long-term asset performance.

Purpose of the role

As a Senior Piping Designer, you will provide advanced piping design expertise across all phases of project execution, from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction support, and commissioning. You will be responsible for developing and reviewing piping models, layouts, and design deliverables while ensuring compliance with customer requirements, project specifications, industry standards, and Worley quality processes.

You will serve as a technical resource within the piping design team, supporting multidisciplinary coordination, mentoring junior designers, and helping drive efficient project execution. Working closely with engineering, drafting, project management, and customer stakeholders, you will develop practical and constructable solutions that support project objectives while maintaining technical excellence, safety, quality, and schedule commitments.

This position is based in our Denver office and supports a hybrid work environment that combines office collaboration, customer engagement, and project delivery activities. The Denver team supports power generation, industrial, energy, and infrastructure projects throughout North America and serves as a key engineering and design center for complex facility projects.

You will be responsible for:
  • Delivering piping design services that meet Worley, customer, statutory, and regulatory requirements while maintaining schedule, budget, safety, and quality objectives.
  • Developing detailed piping models, piping layouts, equipment arrangements, pipe supports, and associated design deliverables utilizing AVEVA E3D and related design tools.
  • Determining line counts, isometric quantities, and piping design requirements based on P&IDs, engineering data, and project specifications.
  • Reviewing and interpreting customer standards, project procedures, design criteria, and technical specifications to support project execution.
  • Identifying design information requirements and proactively managing design inputs to maintain project schedules and deliverable commitments.
  • Providing technical guidance, design direction, and work assignments to work-share teams, CAD technicians, and less experienced designers.
  • Leading model reviews, interference checks, clash detection activities, and design coordination sessions using AVEVA E3D and Navisworks.
  • Reviewing and approving design deliverables prior to issuance while ensuring technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with quality standards.
  • Coordinating piping design activities with process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and project management teams.
  • Developing general arrangement drawings, piping layouts, equipment arrangements, and constructability-focused facility designs.
  • Performing field investigations, site walkdowns, tie-in verification, and existing facility assessments to support brownfield and revamp projects.
  • Integrating field data, laser scan information, and existing facility conditions into 3D models and design deliverables.
  • Supporting constructability evaluations and developing practical solutions that account for operational constraints, maintenance requirements, and installation considerations.
  • Participating in internal, customer, and multidisciplinary design reviews.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives, design standards development, and best practice implementation across the piping design team.
What you’ll bring to the role
  • Two or three-year technical diploma with piping design-focused training, an Associate’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible experience in piping design supporting industrial, power generation, energy, or infrastructure projects.
  • Extensive experience developing piping layouts, piping models, equipment arrangements, and associated design deliverables.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering drawing practices, drafting principles, piping design methodologies, and interdisciplinary design coordination.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AVEVA E3D, including 3D modeling, design reviews, clash detection, and deliverable generation.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience utilizing AVEVA E3D for model development, design review, and project execution activities.
  • Experience working within existing operating facilities, including field verification, tie-in design, and brownfield project execution.
  • Familiarity with laser scanning technologies and integration of scan data into 3D design environments.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation V8i, and other related design software applications.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience checking and verifying piping deliverables both in office and field environments.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet project deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior designers and provide technical leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to effectively engage engineering teams, project stakeholders, customers, and contractors.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, innovation, continuous improvement, and customer service excellence.
  • Willingness to travel and support field assignments as project requirements dictate.

Salary Range is $106,168 - $152,715 annually or ($52 /hr. - $70 /hr.) and commensurate with experience.
