Job description

Summary

Our client is a leading retail general contractor delivering innovative, high-quality construction projects throughout California and the western United States. They are seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to oversee field operations, coordinate subcontractors, and ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with all quality and regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on construction leader with experience in retail construction, remodels, hospitality, fuel stations, open-store remodels, or fast-food projects. This individual will possess strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple subcontractors, maintain project schedules, and drive successful project completion from start to finish.

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Site Management

  • Manage and direct all job site activities from project startup through completion.

  • Coordinate and supervise subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.

  • Lead daily jobsite meetings with clients, subcontractors, inspectors, and project teams.

  • Monitor project schedules and proactively address issues that may impact timelines or budgets.

  • Oversee projects valued at $5M+ while maintaining quality, safety, and profitability goals.

  • Step into existing projects when needed and effectively assume leadership responsibilities.

Construction Operations

  • Review construction plans, specifications, and project documents daily.

  • Conduct regular site walks to monitor progress, verify quality, and coordinate upcoming work.

  • Create, submit, and track RFIs and change order requests.

  • Coordinate inspections and ensure compliance with local building codes and project requirements.

  • Ensure completed work is inspection-ready and meets quality standards.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce company and OSHA safety standards on all projects.

  • Conduct and participate in safety meetings and training programs.

  • Hold subcontractors accountable for adhering to all safety procedures and regulations.

  • Maintain accident-free job sites and proactively identify potential safety concerns.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Utilize Procore to document project progress and maintain project records.

  • Submit daily reports and communicate project updates to the project management team.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of schedules, RFIs, inspections, change orders, and project milestones.

Qualifications & Requirements

Construction Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Construction Superintendent.

  • Minimum 3 years of recent experience in retail construction, retail remodels, hospitality, fuel stations, open-store remodels, or fast-food construction projects.

  • Strong understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and scheduling.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and project documents.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Microsoft Project.

  • Experience with Procore preferred.

  • Strong mathematical skills, including material takeoffs and square footage calculations.

Leadership & Communication

  • Proven ability to lead and motivate subcontractors and field teams.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients, inspectors, and project stakeholders.

  • Ability to maintain accountability and drive projects to successful completion.

Certifications & Additional Requirements

  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

  • Reliable transportation required.

  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.

  • CPR certification preferred.

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including overnight stays as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, climb, and perform general construction-related physical activities.
