Position Summary Information
General Summary
The Field Meter Technician performs skilled mechanical work in field repairs, replacements, and testing of commercial and domestic water meters.
Essential Functions
  • Installs, tests, repairs, rebuilds, replaces, and maintains commercial and domestic water meters from various manufacturers

  • Performs some pipe work repairs, as needed to complete a meter job

  • Replaces worn and/or defective parts and reassembles meters

  • Investigates and reports unusual conditions to his/her supervisor

  • Tests meters at the job site for accuracy and inspects for leaks

  • Tests and repairs meters in the field and/or shop as needed

  • Contacts property owner/occupants and notifies them of repair schedule

  • Ensures safe environment in meter vaults through the use of atmospheric analyzers, fresh air blowers, and water pumps

  • Uses a variety of hand tools (some powered) in cramped, underground vaults, often under adverse environmental and physical conditions

  • Maintains crew vehicle in an inspection-ready status at all times

  • Maintains maintenance or repair records and completes work tickets daily

  • Ensures that the job site conforms with all safety rules and practices as established by OSHA, the State of Maryland, and WSSC Water

  • May read meters, as required

Work Environment And Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift items that weigh up to 100 pounds

  • Work in cramped and/or water-filled underground vaults
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of all commercial and domestic water meter components and procedures for assembly, disassembly, and repair

  • Thorough knowledge of AWWA and WSSC Water meter test standards and parameters for turbine, compound, positive displacement, fire, and detector check meters

  • Knowledge of and ability to use common hand and power tools

  • Ability to direct and instruct less experienced technicians on semi-skilled tasks

  • Ability to give and follow verbal and written instructions

  • Ability to write legibly and prepare work tickets

  • Ability to work effectively with employees and the general public

  • Ability to learn new concepts and skills as technology and procedures evolve
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 2 years of related experience

Additional Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date

  • Must possess or obtain a DOT Medical Card within 90 days of hire or transfer

  • Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work
