Job description

Position Title: Staff Field Engineer/ Civil Design

Location: Las Cruces, NM

Position Type: Exempt/Full time/Regular

Zia Engineering and Environmental Consultants, LLC (Zia) is seeking a highly motivated Assistant Construction Manager / Staff Field Engineer to support ongoing civil construction projects in the Las Cruces, NM area. This position is ideal for a candidate who thrives in field environments and is eager to gain hands‑on experience in construction oversight and site management.

Our leadership team is looking for an Assistant Construction Manager / Staff Field Engineer with 1 to 4+ years of professional experience. This is a boots‑on‑the‑ground role. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated prior experience in field site construction, oversight/inspection of civil site construction projects and/or design related to site engineering, utilities and roadway projects. Work will involve substantial time in the field conducting engineering oversight of civil construction projects, travel to and from construction sites, completion of inspection forms, review and development of project construction budgets, review of construction pay requests, response and management of construction requests for information, and coordination with civil and/or architectural design team(s). Experience in drainage analysis, site design for grading, wet utilities, dry utility coordination, right of way engineering, cost estimating, specification writing, and report writing is a plus. Capabilities and knowledge of AutoCAD is a plus.

The successful candidate must have the knowledge to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of engineering and regulatory requirements and engineering processes. The candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have the ability to communicate with construction field crews, client representatives, design team members, government regulators, and other project stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Construction Managers in day‑to‑day oversight of field activities for civil construction projects, including site grading, utility installation, roadwork, and drainage systems.
  • Maintain daily presence at project sites to monitor contractor performance, site progress, and safety compliance.
  • Complete field inspection forms, daily reports, and photo documentation.
  • Participate in construction meetings, assist with coordination between contractors and design teams, and ensure work aligns with plans, specs and regulations.
  • Support review of construction pay applications, change orders, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Ensure quality control, adherence to schedule, and reporting of any deviations or field issues to the project manager.
  • Travel daily to and from local project sites as required.
Education and Certifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Construction Management, or Engineering from an accredited university is required. Consideration may be given to field engineering technician with substantial experience in lieu of degree.

Experience: A minimum of 1 year of professional civil engineering experience is required for individual with design degree, preferably in the field.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common engineering and technical journals, financial reports and legal contracts and effectively present information and respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and/ or other engineers and team members. Ability to present information and deliverables in a manner that exudes quality, commitment, and service.

Special Considerations

Successful candidate must be able to pass a physical examination and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. This position requires a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain security clearance to access government sites, if required. Drug testing may be required.
