Fiber Optics IMR Specialist
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a forward-thinking, technical professional to manage, protect, and expand Utah's statewide fiber optic infrastructure. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining the critical communications network that powers Utah's modern transportation systems.
About the Role
As a Fiber Optics IMR Specialist, you will oversee field projects, maintain infrastructure integrity, and perform hands-on technical repairs across the state. You will work closely with engineering teams to review design plans, keep construction specifications up to date, and train field inspectors, maintenance crews, and contractors on UDOT standards. When system disruptions occur, you will lead the restoration effort to ensure telecommunications are brought back online quickly and safely. This position balances active field operations-including splicing, testing, and troubleshooting equipment-with data management using GIS mapping tools to keep Utah's network reliable.

Key Responsibilities
As the Fiber Optics IMR Specialist, your duties will include

• Field Installation & Splicing: Install, splice, terminate, and test fiber optic cables, network switches, Cat5 cabling, and drop lines to optimize initial system performance.
• Diagnostics & Emergency Restoration: Operate specialized tools-including Fusion Splicers, Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), and Optical Power Meters-to troubleshoot issues and lead swift emergency repairs following network disruptions.
• Contractor & Project Oversight: Inspect active project sites, review design plans, and monitor contractor work to verify compliance with UDOT safety guidelines, quality standards, and contract specifications.
• Traffic Management System (TMS) Support: Maintain and repair active roadside Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) hardware, such as closed-circuit cameras, highway advisory radios, weather stations, and dynamic message signs.
• Infrastructure Mapping & Training: Update GIS mapping databases and maintenance logs to ensure accurate record-keeping. Assist supervisors in updating specifications and conducting training for field inspectors, maintenance staff, and contractors statewide.

Qualifications
In order to be considered, you must have:

• Driver's License: A valid driver's license.
• Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of direct, professional field experience in fiber optics installation, maintenance, and testing.
• Certification: Must hold International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I and II certifications or be able to get these certifications within 1 year of hire. UDOT provides this training.
• On-Call Availability: Must be available to provide 24-hour on-call support for emergency ITS and fiber optic operations.

Underfill Option
Applicants with less than two years of experience or do not yet have an IMSA Level II certification, may be considered for the Electronic Technical Specialist I level.
Requirement: You must hold IMSA Level I or be able to obtain within one year of hire. UDOT provides this training.
Starting wage: $26.71
Preferred Qualifications
Our ideal candidate is someone who:

• Possesses active fiber optic certifications from recognized bodies (e.g., FOA, Light Brigade, Corning, or AFL).
• Has an Associate Degree or higher in Electrical/Electronic Technology, Information Technology, or a related field OR equivalent experience.
• Has certifications or experience in Computer-Aided Design (CADD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), networking (Networking Specialist Certification), information technology, and complex computer networks.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
In order to be successful, the following are essential:

• Comprehensive understanding of fiber optic principles, signal routing, and basic electronic theory.
• Proficiency in interpreting engineering blueprints, electrical schematics, GIS mapping data, and highway construction plans.
• Hands-on expertise with specialized fiber optic equipment, including fusion splicers, light power meters, and OTDR devices.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, contractor coordination, and team training.
• Working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), agency regulations, and roadside safety protocols.
• Proficiency with standard office productivity software (spreadsheets, word processing) and computer-aided design (CAD) applications.
