Responsibilities

As a Directional Drill Operator/Locator, you will support directional drilling for the installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable. This role involves operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install fiber optic conduit and cable, ensuring minimal surface disruption while adhering to safety standards and project specifications. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to quality, efficiency, and teamwork. You believe in doing the job right. Being the best. And you’re up for the challenge.  

In addition, you will: 

  • Operate Vermeer or Ditch Witch HDD rigs to install conduit and fiber optic cable, achieving typical daily installation targets
  • Read and interpret utility locates, blueprints, and underground utility plans to determine bore paths
  • Perform potholing and utility verification to ensure safe drilling practices
  • Assist in the placement of handholes, vaults, and pedestals as part of the installation process
  • Maintain drilling equipment according to manufacturer specifications, including routine inspections and minor repairs
  • Complete daily paperwork, including as-built drawings and project documentation
  • Ensure job sites are secured and cleaned up at the end of each shift
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with OSHA and NESC standards
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate tasks and address issues promptly
  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced crew members
  • Participate in company-sponsored safety training and professional development programs
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or project manager

  • You have the ability to read and understand maps, drawings, and diagrams for the project build process
  • You have a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a DOT med card for driving purposes (CDL preferred;  applicants are subject to an MVR review, and must meet company standards for a safe driving record)
  • You want to make an impact with your local community and enjoy being home daily 
  • Strong understanding of underground utility construction practices and safe digging procedures
  • Familiarity with utility locating equipment (e.g., DigiTrak, Subsite)
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to underground construction
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and navigate different terrains
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and navigate uneven terrain
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs
  • Comfortable working in outdoor environments in all weather conditions
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and maintain focus throughout the workday
