    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Senior Fiber Optic Technician (OSP) is responsible for the installation, preparation, fusion splicing, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of outside plant (OSP) fiber optic communication systems in industrial and oil sands environments. This is a hands-on field role that requires an experienced technician with a proven background in building and maintaining fiber optic infrastructure using industry-standard splicing and testing equipment.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for completing end-to-end fiber optic installations, performing system testing and certification, diagnosing and repairing faults, and ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with client specifications and industry best practices.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Install, prepare, splice, terminate, and maintain single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cable.
    • Perform fusion splicing for new installations, repairs, maintenance, and system upgrades.
    • Perform fiber optic testing, certification, and troubleshooting using EXFO OTDRs, Power Meters, IOLM, FastReporter, and other industry-standard testing equipment.
    • Diagnose and repair faults within fiber optic communication systems.
    • Complete end-to-end fiber optic builds, including cable preparation, splicing, testing, documentation, and final system verification.
    • Read, interpret, and maintain telecommunications drawings, splice diagrams, cable schedules, and project specifications.
    • Verify completed installations meet client specifications and industry standards.
    • Repair or replace damaged fiber optic cable and related infrastructure as required.
    • Complete testing documentation and maintain accurate project records.
    • Mentor apprentices and junior technicians as required.
    • Maintain a professional working relationship with clients and project stakeholders.
    • Adhere to all company and client safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      • 5-10 years of hands-on experience installing, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining outside plant (OSP) fiber optic networks.
      • Previous experience working in industrial, mining, oil sands, or heavy industrial environments.
      • Demonstrated experience preparing fiber for fusion splicing and completing high-quality fiber optic terminations.
      • Proficient in the use of fusion splicers and EXFO fiber optic testing equipment, including OTDRs, Power Meters, IOLM, and FastReporter software.
      • Strong ability to read and interpret telecommunications drawings, splice diagrams, and technical documentation.
      • Specialized fiber optic training or industry-recognized certifications are preferred. Equivalent combinations of training and extensive hands-on experience will be considered.

        PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

        The Senior Fiber Optic Technician must be able to perform physically demanding field work, including prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and working in awkward positions. The role requires the ability to safely lift, carry, and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lbs, operate hand and power tools, and complete detailed fiber optic preparation, splicing, and testing tasks requiring strong hand dexterity and attention to detail. Employees must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely perform work in industrial environments.

        WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

        This position involves working in a variety of industrial, oil sands, and outside plant (OSP) environments, including both indoor and outdoor work locations. The successful candidate may be exposed to changing weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and other industrial site conditions. This role may require working around active equipment, construction activities, and other potential workplace hazards while following all company and client safety procedures. Employees may be required to travel to various project locations and work flexible schedules based on project requirements.
