Job description

"We Push the Boundaries of Possibilities for our Communities."
Overview of the Position Responsibilities: The Fiber Optic Design Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, engineering, and documenting outside plant (OSP) fiber optic networks that support reliable, scalable broadband deployment. This role develops construction-ready designs for both new builds and upgrades to existing networks, with primary focus on FTTH/FTTx architecture and, where applicable, RF and hybrid fiber-coaxial network environments. The position is accountable for route design, cable sizing, fiber assignments, optical distribution layouts, cabinet and hub placement, splice planning, and construction support to ensure network designs are accurate, compliant, cost-effective, and ready for field execution. This role also partners closely with route engineering, construction, operations, permitting, and contractor teams to maintain project quality, schedule, and documentation standards.
Be part of a team building and delivering fiber-rich connectivity that expands access, improves reliability, and supports the communities we serve.
What You Will Do:
  • Design, engineer, and draft fiber optic OSP networks and supporting infrastructure for aerial, underground, and buried deployments using AutoCAD, GIS, and other approved design platforms.
  • Develop construction-ready engineering packages, including route layouts, cable sizing, splice designs, fiber assignments, cabinet and hub layouts, and detailed supporting documentation.
  • Design FTTH/FTTx network architectures, including feeder, distribution, and drop segments, with appropriate splitter placement, optical paths, and capacity planning.
  • Support RF and hybrid fiber-coaxial network design activities where needed, including powering considerations, node segmentation, and outside plant integration.
  • Work with route engineers, field teams, and construction partners to determine optimal plant paths based on constructability, serviceability, cost, and long-term scalability.
  • Perform plant serviceability reviews, site assessments, and cost estimates to support expansion opportunities, new customer builds, and network upgrades.
  • Create and maintain bills of material, material takeoffs, splice documentation, cutover plans, and other project deliverables required for procurement and field execution.
  • Maintain accurate records, design files, and as-built documentation to support network inventory, resource management, and future maintenance activities.
  • Interpret technical drawings, staking sheets, work orders, specifications, and field feedback to produce accurate and complete engineering outputs.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external contractors to align design standards, schedules, budgets, and quality expectations across projects.
  • Review contractor and construction deliverables, redlines, test results, and closeout documentation to verify adherence to design intent and company standards.
  • Assist with project tracking, milestone reporting, and resolution of design-related issues that could affect schedule, cost, or construction readiness.
  • Support permitting and compliance efforts by providing drawings, technical details, and revisions needed for municipal, utility, and right-of-way approvals.
  • Apply knowledge of industry standards, safety requirements, and engineering best practices to ensure network designs are compliant, practical, and buildable.
  • Use tools such as TDR and OTDR equipment knowledge to support interpretation of test data, validation of builds, and post-construction review.
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies, design methods, and products that can improve network performance, efficiency, or scalability.
  • Represent Bluepeak professionally in interactions with customers, associates, contractors, municipalities, and outside organizations.
  • Complete assignments to Bluepeak quality standards and perform other duties as assigned, including cross-functional support when needed.
  • Travel to assigned locations as necessary to support field reviews, design validation, construction coordination, and project execution.

Salary range: $49,000 - $64,000
What You Will Need:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in engineering technology, telecommunications, GIS, drafting, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Two to four years of experience in fiber optic network design, OSP engineering, telecommunications construction, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of FTTH/FTTx design principles, OSP construction methods, fiber counts, splice architecture, slack management, and network resource assignment.
  • Experience with aerial and underground plant design, including cable routing, conduit systems, pole line considerations, handholes, cabinets, and associated outside plant components.
  • Familiarity with RF or hybrid fiber-coaxial network design concepts is preferred.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications engineering and construction practices, including interpretation of work orders, staking sheets, schematics, cutover plans, and specification manuals.
  • Understanding of applicable industry standards, safety requirements, and regulatory considerations that affect engineering and construction projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, GIS or mapping systems, Microsoft Office applications, and other engineering or network documentation tools used to produce and maintain design records.
  • Ability to create accurate documentation, update network drawings, and maintain detailed records for engineering, construction, and as-built purposes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify design conflicts, assess alternatives, and make sound engineering decisions using available information.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize work effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, operations, construction, and contractor teams.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as a team member.
  • Familiarity with OTDR/TDR concepts, fiber testing practices, and review of construction test results is preferred.
