What is a Fiber Laser Engineer job?

A Fiber Laser Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing fiber laser systems for various industrial, medical, or research applications. They work with optical components, laser sources, and control systems to improve laser performance and efficiency. Their role often includes troubleshooting, testing, and integrating fiber lasers into larger systems. Additionally, they collaborate with engineers and scientists to innovate and refine laser technologies for specific use cases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fiber Laser Engineer position, and why are they important?

Fiber Laser Engineers require a strong background in optics, photonics, laser physics, and fiber optic technology, typically supported by a degree in physics or engineering. Familiarity with simulation software (such as Zemax or Lumerical), laser safety certifications, and hands-on experience with diagnostic instruments like optical spectrum analyzers are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are important for troubleshooting complex systems and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure fiber laser engineers can design, optimize, and maintain advanced laser systems in high-stakes industrial or research environments.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Fiber Laser Engineer?

As a Fiber Laser Engineer, your daily tasks often include designing and testing fiber laser systems, assembling optical components, and troubleshooting laser performance issues. You may regularly analyze system data, collaborate with electronics engineers or software developers, and document your findings for ongoing projects or regulatory compliance. Depending on the company, you might also be involved in client demonstrations, on-site installations, or ongoing product improvement initiatives. This role typically involves both independent technical work and close teamwork with colleagues in engineering, production, and R&D.

Can you make money with a fiber laser?

A Fiber Laser Engineer can earn a competitive salary depending on experience, skills, and location. The role often involves working with high-precision equipment and requires technical knowledge, which can lead to good earning potential in manufacturing, aerospace, or medical device industries.

This is a dynamic, hands-on role for a self-starter who thrives in a fluid startup environment. You'll have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies, work closely with leadership, and develop and implement engineering practices that support our mission and growth. Your key responsibilities are as follows:
  • Architect and develop new laser platforms from concept through prototype and early productization
  • Lead laser design across multiple architectures:
    • External cavity lasers (free-space and fiber-based)
    • Fiber lasers and amplifiers
    • Semiconductor lasers (DFB, DBR, FP, ECL gain chips)
  • Define optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements for new laser systems.
  • Perform and guide:
    • Optical design and modeling
    • Cavity design, mode control, linewidth and noise optimization
    • Wavelength tuning, stabilization, and control
  • Design and execute experiments to characterize:
    • Linewidth, phase noise, RIN
    • SMSR, tuning range, power, efficiency
    • Environmental sensitivity (temperature, vibration, aging)
  • Drive technology trade studies and down-select architectures based on performance, manufacturability, and cost
  • Collaborate closely with:
    • Photonics integration and packaging teams
    • Electronics and control systems engineers
    • Reliability and manufacturing engineering
  • Mentor senior and junior engineers; set technical direction and best practices.
  • Author technical documentation, invention disclosures, and peer-reviewed publications as appropriate.
  • Support transition of designs to production, including design for test and design for manufacturability.

Requirements
  • This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. ยง 1324b(a)(3).

Experience:
  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related field (exceptional MS candidates considered).
