Fhir Api Developer information

What is a FHIR API developer?

FHIR API Developers are software professionals who specialize in creating, integrating, and maintaining applications using the HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard. They design and implement APIs that enable secure, standardized data exchange between healthcare systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs) and third-party apps. Their work ensures interoperability, compliance with healthcare regulations, and improved access to health information. FHIR API Developers typically have expertise in web development, RESTful APIs, and healthcare data standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FHIR API developer?

To thrive as a FHIR API Developer, you need strong programming skills (typically in Java, .NET, or Python), a solid understanding of HL7 FHIR standards, and experience with healthcare interoperability. Familiarity with RESTful APIs, OAuth2 authentication, and tools like HAPI FHIR or IBM FHIR Server is commonly required, along with relevant certifications such as HL7 FHIR proficiency. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and compliant integration of healthcare data systems, which is vital for patient care and regulatory compliance.

What are the typical challenges a FHIR API developer faces when integrating with legacy healthcare systems?

FHIR API Developers often encounter challenges when integrating modern FHIR standards with older, legacy healthcare systems that may not natively support APIs or structured data exchange. Common hurdles include data mapping inconsistencies, limited documentation, and ensuring interoperability while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations like HIPAA. Developers frequently collaborate with clinical informatics teams and system administrators to ensure accurate data translation and seamless workflow integration. Overcoming these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, a solid understanding of HL7 standards, and proactive communication across multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Join a team that’s transforming mental healthcare. Founded by psychiatrists, Headlight is more than a company: it’s a movement. A movement that exists on the front lines of the mental health crisis, transforming the way people access care and the way clinicians deliver it. In order to help people in their time of need and ensure that every person who comes to us has options, we are transparent about our capabilities, treatments, and coverage, we champion innovation, and we leverage our rich data to continuously implement better ways of delivering care. Our mission is simple but powerful: Improving lives, one session at a time.

Our highly skilled and principled clinical team enjoys autonomy and institutional support so they can put their focus where it should be: on improving patient outcomes. Our clinicians want to do more than help individual clients, so they work to affect the system as a whole, elevating standards of care so that their efforts reverberate far beyond what they could do in private practice.

As the most trusted behavioral health partner in the Western U.S., we’ve established deep relationships that give us unparalleled access, interoperability, and first-priority referrals. This exclusivity, combined with our best-in-class coordinated care and feedback loops, results in superior outcomes and cost savings.

Our services are convenient, accessible, and expert, combining personalized client engagement with advanced technology to enhance, not replace, human connection. Indeed, we hold that human-to-human relationships are indispensable, so from the match to the session to the time between sessions, we provide whole person care so nobody falls through the cracks and there is a brighter path forward for all.

We believe the best clinical tool is one that disappears into the background of a care session. This role exists to build toward that - creating clinical workflows that are fast, intuitive, and designed around the clinician's day, so every session can truly be their best work. We are investing in a clinical platform that removes administrative burden, connects the right systems, and gives clinicians the space to focus on what they do best: caring for people.

You will be our first dedicated clinical PM, owning the full clinical product surface: our EHR (NextGen), external platform integrations, self-built clinical tooling, and the interface with clinical operations. You will consolidate fragmented roadmaps, establish a product-led practice, and build toward a clinical platform that connects every clinician to the tools they need to give every person the best outcome. If you are energized by the idea that great product work can directly improve someone's mental health care, this role was built for you.

Our Pillars
  • Make things easier.
  • Forge genuine connections.
  • Elevate the standard.
What You’ll Do
  • Design a vision for world-class clinical experience - thinking in ecosystems across the full clinician journey, not isolated features, and asking what we would build if we were not constrained by what already exists.
  • Own the clinicalsystemsroadmap:work closely with our clinical, operationsand care teams to define priorities andsuccess metrics.
  • Establish product governance - act as the buffer between clinical stakeholders and engineering, and ensure priorities are set by measured impact.
  • Evaluate AI and third- party tools with rigor: define evaluation criteria, assess build vs. configure vs. buy for every initiative, and apply solutions where they genuinely give clinicians time back - not as a default.
  • Measure the benefit in terms that matterwhere every initiative has a baseline before and after: time saved per session, reduction in non-billable administrative hours, billed hours unlocked, and clinical outcomes improved.
  • Work across the full spectrum of clinical delivery - fromoptimizingworkflows inside NextGen (templates, task routing, clinical documentation) to designing integrations that extend the EHR into our broader ecosystem, to scoping and building net-new clinical tooling where no off-the-shelf solution exists.
  • Own the integration layer between our clinical tools - Blueprint, NextGen, and any custom-built surfaces - ensuring they work together as a coherent system rather than a set of disconnected point solutions that cliniciansmustmanually bridge.
  • Build clinical safety into the practice from the start - understand where our tooling intersects withclient safety and ensure speed of delivery never comes at the cost of clinical integrity.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 7+ years of product management experience, with meaningful time in healthcare or clinical tools.
  • Preferred hands-on EHR experience - you know how they work, where they are configurable, and where they need a build-around.[NextGen, Epic,AdvancedMDor Athena]
  • Familiarity with healthcare systems integration (HL7, FHIR, API-based) and the judgment to know what belongs natively in an EHR vs. an external layer.
  • A track record of building product practice from scratch - creating structure, earning trust, and delivering measurable improvement.
  • AI literacy applied practically: you can evaluate tools, assess clinical risk and integration complexity, and make informed decisions.
  • The ability to quantify benefits concretely to measure outcomes: saved time, recovered hours, improved throughput.
  • Direct clinical or clinical operations background preferred. Experience in behavioral health is a plus.
Why This Role

This is a high-impact, high-visibility role at a company that is early in building a proper clinical product function which means you will shape it rather than inherit it. You will have genuine authority over the clinical roadmap, a direct line to the Head of Product, and the opportunity to build something the clinical team has not had before: a platform they actually want to use.

Benefits
  • W2 role with competitive compensation
  • Medical, Dental and Vision on the first of the month after employment
  • Paid Vacation, Sick, and Holiday time
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential counseling services, resources, and support to help you navigate personal or professional challenges.
  • 401(k) plan with company contribution
  • Opportunity to work in a cutting-edge healthcare technology environment
  • Professional development opportunities and training
  • Collaborative and supportive work culture
  • Impactful role contributing to the enhancement of patient care and healthcare processes

$150,000 - $170,000 a year
