What is a Fellowship Remote?

A Fellowship Remote is a professional development program or position that offers fellows the opportunity to work, learn, or conduct research remotely, rather than at a physical location. These fellowships are often designed for early-career professionals, researchers, or students who want to gain experience, skills, or mentorship in their field while working from anywhere. Remote fellowships can be found in various sectors such as academia, technology, non-profits, and the arts. They typically include mentorship, networking opportunities, and sometimes a stipend or other support.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a remote fellowship program?

Remote fellowship programs offer flexibility and access to global opportunities, but fellows may face challenges such as time zone differences, maintaining consistent communication with mentors and peers, and staying motivated without in-person interaction. Developing strong self-discipline and utilizing collaboration tools can help overcome these obstacles. Fellows are encouraged to proactively schedule regular check-ins, participate in virtual networking events, and seek feedback to maximize their learning and growth in a remote setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fellowship Program Manager (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fellowship Program Manager in a remote setting, you need experience in program coordination, knowledge of educational or nonprofit sectors, and often a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with virtual collaboration tools, project management platforms, and CRM systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and organizational skills are crucial to effectively manage fellows and stakeholders remotely. These abilities ensure smooth program operations, effective engagement, and successful outcomes in a distributed work environment.

Job description

Discover Your Career at Emory University
Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.
Description
Position Summary:
This postdoctoral position supports the design and execution of research investigating language indicators of psychosis across phylogenetically diverse languages. This work is part of the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® in Schizophrenia (AMP® SCZ)-the largest schizophrenia research initiative funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (fNIH), and numerous industry partners.
The AMP SCZ project involves collaboration across 42 international sites and includes a clinical trial conducted at 15 U.S. locations. At the Emory University site-Language Biomarker Lab-research focuses on aligning spoken language with facial expressions and vocal characteristics to enable multimodal analysis. This alignment supports the integration of clinical interview data (including open-ended interviews and audio diaries) with other biomarkers such as MRI, EEG, and genetic data, with the aim of enhancing early detection of psychosis and evaluating the efficacy of two candidate medications.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop and maintain computational pipelines for detecting atypical patterns of communication in clinical populations, with a particular focus on individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis. Features of interest span multiple levels of analysis, including acoustic characteristics, semantic structure, discourse organization, topic maintenance, and facial movement dynamics. The lab has access to a dedicated GPU cluster, including A100, H100, and H200 GPUs, to support large-scale model development, training, and fine-tuning of large language models. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigator to analyze data, prepare scientific manuscripts, and publish findings. Depending on project needs, the postdoc may also help manage specialized equipment and maintain the lab's audio/video data-processing pipelines.
Appointment Details:
This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree in a relevant field
  • Excellent scientific writing and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues both at Emory and collaborating institutions

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Psychology, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, or Linguistics
  • Experience with natural language processing (NLP) and generative language models

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
