How much do federal welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for federal welding in California is $29.40, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.03 and $33.70 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a federal welder?

Federal welders are professionals who perform welding work on projects that are funded, regulated, or overseen by the federal government. Their duties often involve adhering to strict codes and standards, such as those set by the American Welding Society (AWS) or specific government agencies. Federal welders may work on infrastructure projects, military equipment, or government buildings, and they must often pass certification tests and security clearances. Their work is crucial for ensuring the safety and integrity of critical government assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a federal welder?

To thrive as a Federal Welder, you need strong skills in various welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, often supported by a high school diploma and specialized welding certifications like AWS or ASME. Familiarity with welding equipment, safety protocols, and government contract standards is essential, as is experience with inspection systems and quality control tools. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication ensure precise workmanship and adherence to strict federal specifications. These skills and qualities are vital for meeting rigorous safety, quality, and regulatory requirements in federal projects.

What are some common challenges faced by federal welders, and how can they prepare for them?

Federal welders often work on highly regulated projects that require strict adherence to government standards and safety protocols. One common challenge is maintaining certification and staying current with evolving codes, such as those set by the American Welding Society (AWS) or specific federal agencies. Additionally, federal welders may face tight project deadlines and work in diverse environments, including outdoors or on military bases. To prepare, it's important to pursue ongoing training, develop strong attention to detail, and build familiarity with government documentation and inspection processes.

What is the difference between Federal Welding vs Commercial Welding?

AspectFederal WeldingCommercial Welding
CertificationsAWS Certified Welder, federal-specific safety trainingAWS Certified Welder, industry-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentGovernment facilities, military bases, federal projectsConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, private projects
Employer & Industry UsageFederal agencies, military, government contractorsPrivate companies, construction firms, manufacturing

Federal Welding involves working on government and military projects with specific safety and certification requirements, often in secure or specialized environments. Commercial Welding is more focused on private sector projects like construction and manufacturing, with certifications aligned to industry standards. Both roles require welding skills and certifications, but the work settings and project types differ significantly.

How much does a federal welder make?

Federal welders typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. They often work on government projects requiring specialized skills and adherence to safety standards, with opportunities for overtime and benefits.

Job description

The Role

We are seeking a Welding Engineer to support the development of Hadrian’s next-generation automated factory systems for mission-critical aerospace and defense components. You will work alongside a highly driven team of design, automation, and manufacturing engineers to bring welded assemblies from concept through full-rate production.

This is a hands‑on, factory‑integrated role requiring strong technical depth in materials and welding processes, as well as comfort operating in high‑pace manufacturing environments.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop, qualify, and optimize welding processes including, but not limited to laser beam welding, gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), orbital tube welding, resistance welding, gas metal arc welding (GMAW), friction stir welding, or plasma arc welding
  • Work with welding of high strength steel, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, and other high‑performance alloys
  • Collaborate closely with design, tooling, automation, and manufacturing engineers to implement new parts and welding technologies into production
  • Partner with NDE personnel to evaluate weld quality on development and production hardware, and support the implementation of advanced inspection techniques
  • Support production scale‑up by creating detailed welding work instructions, defining equipment maintenance plans, and authoring Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable aerospace, defense, and maritime welding standards
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (equivalent experience considered)
  • 2+ years of experience in welding engineering or weld process development
  • Fundamental understanding of: Laser beam welding, gas tungsten arc welding, orbital tube welding, resistance welding, gas metal arc welding, friction stir welding, or plasma arc welding
  • High‑strength steel, stainless steel, nickel‑based alloys, titanium, and aluminum alloys
  • Self‑motivated with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and clearly communicate status and results across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
What Will Set You Apart
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, shipbuilding, or offshore manufacturing
  • Familiarity with standards such as: AWS (e.g., D1.1, D1.2, D17.1), ASME Section IX, MIL‑STD welding requirements, ABS, NAVSEA, DNV, or other maritime classification standards
  • Experience with robotic or automated welding systems
  • Exposure to NDT processes and inspection program development
  • Experience qualifying and managing external weld suppliers
  • Background in high‑mix, low‑volume or advanced manufacturing environments
Compensation

For this role, the target salary range is $120,000-$250,000 (actual range may vary based on experience).

This is the lowest to highest salary we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee's pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Benefits for Full‑time Employees
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans for employees
  • 401k
  • Relocation support may be provided for certain situations, based on business need.
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Equity
