Job Overview

Description

Courthouse Security performs duties associated with the general security of the Dubuque County Courthouse, including courtrooms and chambers, offices, and other areas within the building, responds to requests for service from state and county employees within the courthouse, and performs other related duties consistent with providing security and enforcement actions necessary to maintain a safe and secure environment for persons conducting business within the Dubuque County Courthouse.

Job Duties

  • Maintaining the general security of the courthouse and all persons therein;

  • Responding to any areas of the courthouse where a problem or situation warrants the presence of security personnel, either in response to calls for assistance by courthouse employees and/or the general citizenry, or by direct knowledge of such a situation through observation or hearing;

  • Summoning all necessary assistance from other law enforcement personnel to assist them in taking necessary action to remove any threat to safety or decorum within the courthouse;

  • Monitoring metal detectors located at any entrances to the courthouse to ascertain the presence of any dangerous items being introduced into the courthouse, including requiring persons to pass through such detectors and performing visual inspection of any packages, purses, briefcases, and other carried items which may be used to introduce dangerous or threatening items into the building or to disrupt the security of the courthouse or any persons therein;

  • Using a handheld detector to more closely check any persons who cause the alarm in the detector to activate;

  • Denying entry to the courthouse of any person who indicates through their actions or activation of the detector systems, and who refuses to submit to closer scrutiny or who refuses to provide adequate reasons for such refusal;

  • Assisting the Dubuque County Jail by handling certain scheduled depositions, trials, or other Court hearings pertaining to inmates of the jail as deemed necessary by courthouse security;

  • Performing other requested duties consistent with the task of providing security within the Dubuque County Courthouse.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; Satisfactory driving record and possession of a valid Driver's License.Current or past certification as a peace officer in the State of Iowa as certified by Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Must be authorized to work in the United States. Dubuque County does not sponsor work visas or provide immigration sponsorship.

  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and the preparation of comprehensive reports as necessary;

  • Ability to analyze a situation and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard for surrounding hazards, circumstances and persons;

  • Ability to successfully complete a Dubuque County Sheriff's Office certified firearms course as required by department training standards;

  • Physical agility and endurance to perform all required duties;

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when necessary to meet emergencies
