What is an FEA engineer?
An FEA (Finite Element Analysis) Engineer is responsible for using computer simulations to analyze the structural, thermal, and fluid dynamics behavior of products or components. They use FEA software like ANSYS, Abaqus, or NASTRAN to predict stresses, deformations, and failures in materials under various conditions. FEA Engineers work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing to optimize designs, improve product reliability, and reduce costs. Their role involves interpreting results, validating simulations with physical tests, and collaborating with design teams to enhance product performance.
What does an FEA engineer do?
As a FEA Engineer, your daily tasks often include developing finite element models, running simulations to predict product behavior under various conditions, and analyzing the results to identify potential design improvements or weaknesses. You will collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and test teams to ensure simulation results align with real-world performance and project requirements. You may also be responsible for documenting your findings, presenting recommendations, and refining models based on new data or project needs. This role provides opportunities to impact product safety, reliability, and efficiency through your technical expertise.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FEA engineer?
To thrive as a FEA (Finite Element Analysis) Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or structural engineering, proficiency in mathematical modeling, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Mastery of FEA software tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or NASTRAN, and relevant certifications, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are essential to ensure accurate simulations, optimize product designs, and contribute to successful engineering projects.

Job Description
The CAE Engineer for Noise and Vibration (N&V) leads the virtual performance integration of the vehicle components and subsystems as they relate to noise and vibration characteristics. This role utilizes advanced simulation tools and full vehicle modeling to evaluate and influence design decisions, ensuring N&V performance is effectively integrated across disciplines. By aligning technical solutions with vehicle-level objectives, the engineer helps deliver customer-focused performance while balancing trade-offs across multiple domains.
The engineer in this role will be focused on structural vibration and structure-borne noise using primarily finite element methods. The engineer performs complex computer simulations to predict N&V performance against defined metrics and develops integrated solutions that meet program requirements. This role is instrumental in driving enterprise-wide alignment, ensuring N&V considerations are embedded early and consistently throughout the vehicle development process.
Senior CAE Engineer
What You'll Do
- Lead the design and development of systems impacting N&V through simulation-based evaluation, ensuring alignment with vehicle-level performance targets.
- Perform advanced analytical simulations at the full vehicle, subsystem, and component levels using primarily finite element tools (FEA) for structural vibration and structure-borne noise including mid-frequency.
- Build, debug, and execute simulation models to predict N&V performance and generate actionable design recommendations.
- Develop technical solutions that meet N&V targets while optimizing for mass, cost, and packaging constraints.
- Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure holistic performance integration.
- Develop technical solutions using Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and other methodologies enabling optimal and robust designs.
- Lead the development of new CAE techniques, simulation tools, and procedures, including solver parameters and material characterization.
- Stay current with emerging CAE tools, technologies, and competitive product trends through training and technical workshops.
- Lead Closed-Loop Learning (CLL) initiatives and actively participate in forums supporting virtualization and enterprise-wide performance integration.
- Engage in Global CAE Product & Technical Focus Groups and other collaborative engineering communities.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math or Science or closely related field of study
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience
- Understanding of Noise & Vibration theory as it applies to vehicle performance.
- Good presentation, written and oral communication skills
- Exhibits appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals.
- High degree of analytical ability (root cause failure analysis) where problems are complex or difficult
- Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering Aerospace Engineering, Math or Science or closely related field of study
- 7+ years of post-graduate N&V experience, preferably using FEA, MBD, or SEA methods for analysis
- Familiarity with a variety of CAE tools (such as Ansa, HyperMesh, OPTISTRUCT, Simpack, Adams, Wave6, Actran, etc.)
- Education or experience in the following:
- Design, development, and optimization of vehicle structures
- Static, dynamic, thermal and fatigue analyses for chassis, frames, body, interior, and powertrain structures
- Hardware based N&V Vehicle Development or N&V laboratory testing or data acquisition
- Good understanding of establishing loads and boundary conditions for FEA or MBD modeling and analysis.
- Familiarity or experience in SaFE Agile practices
- Experience working globally with regional partners
