Job description

During the Renaissance in Florence, affluent merchants sought a way to protect their gold while ensuring it remained productive. The Medici family introduced a groundbreaking solution: by depositing assets with them, wealth remained secure and earned steady returns while staying liquid. This marked the birth of intelligent wealth management. Today, that same drive for financial ingenuity and innovation is reflected in the modern startup ecosystem.
Mercury captures this innovative spirit to provide an exceptional banking* experience for everyone. Our Investments Team develops innovative solutions for founders deciding how to utilize idle capital. We have built a financial platform that enables startups to deploy their cash effectively, merging maximizing yield with capital preservation in a streamlined interface. It is institutional-level cash management specifically designed for high-growth startups.
The Investments Team consists of backend and frontend engineers dedicated to crafting sophisticated products that oversee billions in customer assets as Mercury expands. We maintain a high standard of precision and excellence, recognizing that modern startups need solutions that surpass traditional expectations.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Investments Team, you'll play a key role as a technical leader and hands-on engineer in building scaled, novel, and compliant Trading & Custody systems. These systems power our Treasury and Invest products and empower our internal Investment Operations team with robust and efficient tools. You will showcase a strong sense of ownership in a collaborative, cross-functional environment while bringing the entire engineering team along with you as a leader.
As part of this role, you will:
  • Lead high-impact, cross-functional projects across the Investments space.
  • Architect, build, and scale brokerage trading and/or custody systems and processes.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, and compliance to ship thoughtful features for our customers and internal users.
  • Feel a strong sense of product ownership and actively seek responsibility - we want someone excited to help shape and build Mercury's future.
  • Join a team of engineers who do not take themselves seriously as we manage billions of dollars of customer assets.

The ideal candidate for the role:
  • Has 5-7+ years of backend experience with a strong sense of ownership and detail.
  • Domain knowledge of broker-dealer trading and/or custody systems that support both individual securities (equities, fixed income) as well as ETFs and mutual funds.
  • Understands scale and isn't afraid to dig into AWS and infrastructure solutions.
  • Has been the technical lead of complex projects with many stakeholders from inception to completion with a track record of success.
  • Made architectural decisions measuring the impact of those decisions over time. You should be able to clearly articulate your technical opinions and lay out tradeoffs.
