What is an FBO?

FBO stands for Fixed Base Operator, which refers to a business or organization that provides various services to general aviation aircraft, crews, and passengers at an airport. These services typically include fueling, aircraft parking, hangaring, maintenance, and amenities such as lounges or ground transportation. FBOs are commonly found at airports that accommodate private, business, and charter flights, rather than commercial airlines. They play a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations for non-commercial aviation and often serve as the main point of contact for pilots and passengers using general aviation airports.

What does an FBO do?

Working at an FBO involves a variety of responsibilities that support general aviation operations. Typical daily tasks may include coordinating aircraft fueling, handling, and parking, assisting with customer service for pilots and passengers, and managing scheduling or logistics for hangar space. Many roles also require working closely with ramp agents, maintenance crews, and administrative staff to ensure safe and efficient operations. Flexibility and strong communication skills are important, as the work often involves adapting to changing flight schedules and customer needs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an FBO?

To thrive as an FBO professional, you need a solid understanding of aviation operations, customer service excellence, and relevant safety protocols, often supported by experience in airport or aviation management. Familiarity with fueling systems, ground handling equipment, and aviation software like FBO management platforms is typically required. Outstanding communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart when assisting pilots and coordinating services. These abilities are crucial to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality service delivery to clients in a dynamic airport environment.
