What is a fax server?

Fax servers are specialized software or hardware systems that manage the sending, receiving, and storage of faxes electronically over a network. They allow organizations to send and receive faxes digitally, eliminating the need for traditional fax machines and paper documents. Fax servers improve efficiency by integrating with email and document management systems, enhancing security and archiving capabilities. This technology is commonly used in businesses that require secure and reliable document exchange.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fax server administrator?

To thrive as a Fax Server Administrator, you need a solid understanding of network administration, server management, and troubleshooting, typically supported by relevant IT certifications or experience. Familiarity with fax server software (such as RightFax or GFI FaxMaker), Windows or Linux server environments, and integration with email systems is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you respond quickly to issues and coordinate with end users. These skills ensure reliable fax operations, minimize downtime, and maintain secure and efficient document transmission within an organization.

What are the common challenges faced by professionals managing fax server operations, and how can these be effectively addressed?

Professionals managing fax server operations often encounter challenges such as ensuring reliable transmission, maintaining security of sensitive documents, and integrating fax systems with modern digital workflows. To address these, it’s important to regularly update and monitor server software, implement strict access controls, and establish robust backup procedures. Additionally, collaborating closely with IT and support teams helps to quickly resolve technical issues and adapt to evolving organizational needs. Continuous training and staying informed about new compliance standards also contribute to smoother operations.

Staff Software Engineer (Healthcare Intelligence)

Taxo.ai, Inc.

Manhattan, NY • On-site

$180 - $260/hr

Other

Medical, PTO

Posted 17 days ago

Key responsibilities

  • Build and ship deep, bidirectional integrations with major EHR/PMS platforms, accommodating different clinic configurations.

  • Develop AI-powered pipelines to ingest, classify, and act on unstructured communications such as faxes, patient portal messages, and insurance emails.

  • Design and own the core data architecture, including data models, storage, and event-driven systems that connect healthcare systems to the platform.

Job description

The Mission

"Leading healthcare into the agentic era."

A specialty clinic doesn’t just run on phone calls. Every day, thousands of faxes, patient portal messages, insurance emails, prior authorizations, and billing codes flow through the front desk. Most of it is processed manually. Slowly. With errors. And patients pay the price.

Taxo is building the intelligence layer that connects to every system a clinic touches — EHRs, practice management systems, billing platforms, fax servers, patient portals — and turns that chaos into structured, automated workflows. If the Voice AI Platform is the mouth of Taxo, Healthcare Intelligence is the brain.

The Opportunity: Own the Data Layer

We’ve secured major agreements with conglomerate healthcare groups across the US, UK, and KSA. The complexity is enormous — and that’s exactly why this role exists.

As our Founding Engineer for Healthcare Intelligence, you’ll build the integrations, data pipelines, and AI-powered processing systems that make Taxo work across every clinic, every system, and every country we operate in. You won’t just be connecting APIs — you’ll be designing the data architecture that the entire platform depends on.

What You’ll Do
  • Build the Integration Engine: Architect and ship deep, bidirectional integrations with major EHR/PMS platforms (Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, and more). Build for the reality that every clinic configures these systems differently.
  • Process the Unstructured: Build AI-powered pipelines that ingest, classify, and act on faxes, patient portal messages, insurance emails, referral documents, and other non-voice communications that flood the front desk daily.
  • Master the Billing Layer: Parse, validate, and automate workflows around CPT codes, ICD-10, prior authorizations, insurance verification, and claims — turning manual billing operations into intelligent, automated processes.
  • Design the Data Architecture: Own the core data models, storage layer, and event-driven systems that connect Taxo’s voice agents to the healthcare systems they need to operate. Every scheduling action, every refill, every triage decision flows through your infrastructure.
  • Ship Across Standards: Work with HL7, FHIR, X12, CCD/CCDA, and other healthcare data standards to ensure interoperability across the fragmented ecosystem of clinical software.
  • Build for Compliance: Design systems that are HIPAA-compliant by default — encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, access controls, and the operational rigor that healthcare demands.
  • Scale Globally: Adapt integration patterns for US, UK, and KSA healthcare systems, each with its own regulatory and technical requirements.
The Stack

We move fast with a modern, scalable toolkit:

  • Backend: Node.js (TypeScript), Python for data/ML pipelines
  • Data & Infrastructure: Postgres, Redis, AWS, Terraform
  • Integration: HL7/FHIR, X12, REST/SOAP APIs, secure fax protocols
  • Intelligence: Leading-edge LLMs for document parsing, classification, and entity extraction
Who You Are
  • The Veteran: 5+ years of experience building production software, with a track record of impact at a top-tier tech company or high-growth startup. You’ve shipped complex systems under pressure and you know how to make hard trade-offs.
  • The Systems Thinker: You understand that healthcare data is messy, inconsistent, and high-stakes. You’ve built integrations with enterprise systems before and you know the difference between a demo and production-grade interoperability.
  • The Data Engineer: You think in pipelines, schemas, and event-driven architectures. You can design a system that ingests a fax image, extracts structured data via AI, validates it against a billing code set, and writes it back to an EHR — reliably, at scale.
  • The Owner: You don’t wait for specs. You understand the problem, talk to the users, and build the right thing. You’re opinionated about data quality and system reliability.
  • Bonus: Direct experience with EHR/PMS integrations, healthcare data standards (HL7/FHIR/X12), medical billing systems, or HIPAA-compliant infrastructure.
Why Taxo

We are solving a trillion-dollar problem in one of the world’s most essential industries. With global enterprise backing and a clear path to expansion, this is a rare chance to join as a founding member with “day one” impact and “year five” stability.

  • Founding-Level Equity — 0.5–2%. You’re not joining a team, you’re building a company. Your stake reflects that.
  • Deep Technical Challenge — Healthcare data is one of the hardest integration problems in software. If you want easy, this isn’t it. If you want meaningful, it is.
  • Impact That Matters — Every pipeline you build directly reduces the administrative burden that keeps patients from getting care.
  • Competitive Compensation — Including health coverage, unlimited PTO, and the flexibility to do your best work.
  • Global From Day One — US, UK, and KSA operations. Three healthcare systems, three regulatory environments, one platform.
How We Work

Taxo is a small, fast, high-conviction team. We don’t do bureaucracy. We don’t do “that’s not my job.” We believe the best products are built by people who care deeply about the problem, move with urgency, and hold themselves to an impossibly high standard.

If you want to be a founding engineer at a company that’s changing how healthcare works — we’d love to hear from you.
