Job description

OVERVIEW
JOB TITLE: Machine Design Peer Tutor
LOCATION: St. Paul Campus
PAY RATE: $16.50/ hour
HOURS: Must be available to support lab times Tuesday or Thursday 8-11:35am
JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking a responsible and technically proficient student to serve as a Peer Tutor for the Machine Design Laboratory. The Peer Tutor will support student learning in applied mechanical design concepts, including analysis, CAD modeling, fabrication, and experimental validation of machine components and systems. This role focuses on reinforcing engineering fundamentals, promoting safe and effective lab practices, and assisting students as they develop and test machine design projects. The Peer Tutor will work closely with the course instructor and lab staff to enhance student learning and lab execution.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide in-lab tutoring and guidance to students working on machine design projects.
  • Assist students with CAD modeling, technical drawings, and interpretation of engineering specifications.
  • Support understanding and application of machine design concepts such as stress analysis, mechanisms, fasteners, and material selection.
  • Reinforce proper use of machine shop tools, fabrication equipment, and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Assist students in troubleshooting design, assembly, and testing issues under faculty direction.
  • Communicate recurring student challenges and lab needs to instructional staff to improve course delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current student, pursuing a BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field graduating approximately June 2027.
  • Completed coursework in Machine Design.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in mechanical design principles, including stress analysis, failure theories, fasteners, mechanisms, and material selection.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or equivalent)
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts in a clear and structured manner
  • Commitment to enforcing laboratory safety procedures and best practices
  • Must be available to support lab times Tuesday or Thursday 8-11:35am

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
