FastAPI Developers often encounter challenges when integrating third-party services, such as handling authentication protocols (like OAuth2), ensuring compatibility between JSON schemas, and managing asynchronous calls to avoid performance bottlenecks. It’s also common to troubleshoot and adapt to inconsistencies in external API documentation or rate limits. Collaborating closely with frontend teams and DevOps professionals helps streamline these integrations, ensuring robust, scalable API solutions.

What is the difference between Fastapi Developer vs Backend Developer?

AspectFastapi DeveloperBackend Developer
Required SkillsPython, Fastapi, REST APIs, async programmingMultiple languages (Python, Java, Node.js), REST/SOAP APIs, databases
Work EnvironmentWeb development, API-focused projects, microservicesBroader software development, server-side logic, database management
Industry UsageTech startups, SaaS, API-driven servicesEnterprise, e-commerce, finance, various industries

Fastapi Developers specialize in building high-performance APIs using Python and Fastapi, often within microservices architectures. Backend Developers have a broader scope, working with multiple languages and technologies to develop server-side applications across various industries. While Fastapi Developers focus on API efficiency, Backend Developers handle comprehensive backend systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FastAPI developer?

To thrive as a FastAPI Developer, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, RESTful API design, and experience with FastAPI, often supported by a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like SQL/NoSQL databases, Docker, and cloud platforms, as well as knowledge of asynchronous programming and API documentation tools like Swagger, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding FastAPI developers apart. These skills are crucial for building reliable, high-performance APIs that meet modern application demands and facilitate seamless team collaboration.

What is a FastAPI developer?

A FastAPI Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building web applications and APIs using the FastAPI framework, which is a modern, fast (high-performance) web framework for Python. FastAPI Developers are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs that are efficient, robust, and scalable. They often work with databases, authentication, and deployment processes, and ensure that the API endpoints adhere to best practices for security and performance. Their work is crucial for enabling smooth communication between front-end applications and backend systems.

San Francisco, CA

Job description

San Francisco, CA · On-site · Full-time Compensation: $210,000–$285,000 + 0.25%–0.6% equity

About the Company

Our client builds AI agents that automate the document-heavy operational work behind customs brokerage — reading shipment documents, classifying goods, and generating compliant customs filings with minimal manual input. Global trade is a ~$10T industry still running on manual workflows; the platform cuts customs clearance times to under 5 minutes and has already given 30,000+ hours back to brokerage teams. It's past zero-to-one with strong month-over-month revenue growth and customers processing meaningful operational volume daily.

Industry: AI / logistics / trade compliance

The Role

The client is hiring Senior Full Stack Engineers to own core systems across the full stack — from backend services and data pipelines to the product surfaces operations teams use daily — with full production ownership.

Tech stack: Python, FastAPI, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, Temporal.

Requirements
  • 5–8+ years of professional software engineering, with a track record in high-growth, fast-paced environments (open to 3+ years for candidates with an exceptional top-50 university pedigree)
  • Deep proficiency in TypeScript and React, able to architect complex state management for data-intensive applications
  • Advanced PostgreSQL — schema design, indexing, query optimization
  • A "builder" who prefers shipping over over-engineering, writes crisp requirements, and drives cross-functional delivery with minimal supervision
  • Experience (or deep interest) integrating AI APIs and handling complex document-extraction workflows
  • Energized by working shoulder-to-shoulder with founders in the SF office
Nice to Haves
  • A founding or early-stage engineer on the resume — has built without scaffolding
  • Production code on both Python/FastAPI and TypeScript/React (actually shipped, not "familiar with")
  • AI API or document extraction in a real, live product
  • Concept-to-production under startup timelines (e.g., "built X in N weeks")
  • Held uptime during a scaling event, not just green-field builds
  • Enterprise-adjacent exposure (security, compliance, data retention)
Why Join
  • Real traction past zero-to-one: customs clearance under 5 minutes, 30,000+ hours saved, strong MoM revenue growth
  • Strong backing and pedigree: a founding team from top tech companies and AI research labs
  • High ownership and meaningful equity: own core systems end to end, working shoulder-to-shoulder with founders
Details
  • Location — San Francisco, CA
  • Work policy — On-site
  • Compensation — $210,000–$285,000 + 0.25%–0.6% equity
  • Visa sponsorship — H-1B transfers, OPT, and O-1 considered; no new sponsorship
  • Employment type — Full-time
