Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
As a Lab Engineer in the OISL Rework/Recovery area on 2nd shift, you will be responsible for performing hardware rework, failure analysis, and recovery operations for Optical Inter-Satellite Link (OISL) components and assemblies. We are looking for candidates who thrive in a fast-paced, start-up like environment. To be successful you need to be highly motivated and detail oriented while showing the highest standards of execution.
Key job responsibilities
Perform hardware rework operations on OISL components including complex assembly/disassembly, component replacement, and precision alignment procedures
Execute failure analysis and root cause investigations on non-conforming OISL hardware
Develop and maintain SOPs for rework operations, recovery processes, and quality control procedures
Implement safety protocols and ensure compliance with all safety standards for optical systems and precision hardware
Lead process improvement initiatives to increase rework efficiency, reduce scrap rates, and improve first-pass yield
Conduct detailed inspections and testing of reworked hardware to validate functionality and performance
Collaborate with engineering teams to validate rework procedures and implement corrective actions
Train team members on proper rework techniques, safety protocols, and quality standards
Document technical issues, rework procedures, resolutions, and lessons learned
Track and report on rework metrics including cycle time, yield rates, and defect trends
A day in the life
Laboratory setting with specialized optical test equipment and precision rework tools. May require occasional extended hours to support critical hardware recovery efforts. Collaborative team environment focused on product quality, reliability, and continuous improvement.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of software QA testing work with writing the test plans, use cases, and issue reports experience
- 3+ years of consumer electronics lab environments experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent work experience
- Experience in software QA testing including writing test plans, use cases, and issue reports
- Experience in a consumer electronics lab environment
- Experience in a Linux or Unix environment
- Experience working on a consumer hardware or software product
- Associate's degree in Electronics, Mechanics, Product Design, Manufacturing Technologies, Computer Science, or other STEM discipline, or equivalent work experience
- 1+ years of experience in a technical lab environment or production rework environment
- Experience with hardware rework, assembly/disassembly, or precision manufacturing operations
- Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interpret engineering documentation including drawings, schematics, and work instructions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of Jenkins build environments
- Experience configuring, deploying, and testing software updates, including the ability to identify issues and escalate to development as appropriate
- Experience running user trials, beta, field testing or collecting customer feedback
- Experience working with hardware and software teams for setting up, testing, and troubleshooting prototype devices
- Experience with optical systems, fiber optics, or photonics hardware
- Experience with precision alignment, bonding, or micro-assembly techniques
- Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems and testing equipment
- Familiarity with lab equipment calibration and maintenance
- Background in continuous improvement frameworks (Six Sigma, Lean, 5S)
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills
- Experience with BGA rework, underfill processes, or advanced PCB rework techniques

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
