Job description

Job Description: Associate Food Scientist

Company Overview Our client is an innovative food and beverage manufacturer dedicated to transforming metabolic health through high-protein, performance-driven CPG products.

Role Overview We are seeking a hands-on Associate Food Scientist to own formulation, testing, and iteration across our product portfolio. In this benchtop-focused role, you will transform ideas into finished, scalable products—leading work from benchtop experimentation through pilot runs and early production. You will work closely with cross-functional teams in commercialization, supply chain, and quality to ensure all products meet strict taste, nutrition, safety, cost, and scale standards.

Position Details

  • Job Title: Associate Food Scientist
  • Location: New York City, NY (100% On-Site, 5 days/week)
  • Employment Type: Full-Time / Direct Hire

Key Responsibilities

Product Development & Formulation

  • Lead hands-on benchtop formulation and experimentation to develop high-protein, low-calorie food concepts.
  • Translate early concepts into testable hypotheses, prototypes, and scalable formulas.
  • Research and evaluate novel ingredient systems, processing methods, and functional ingredients.
  • Drive rapid iteration based on sensory feedback, data, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Document all formulas, methodology, and experimental results meticulously.

Sensory & Technical Evaluation

  • Conduct internal sensory panels and lab testing to assess flavor, texture, appearance, and physical performance.
  • Utilize analytical and sensory feedback to drive targeted formulation adjustments.

Scale-Up & Commercialization

  • Support pilot and early production runs, mitigating formulation, process, and ingredient risks.
  • Partner with commercialization, operations, and manufacturing teams during initial rollouts.
  • Assist with supplier assessments, ingredient specs, testing protocols, and nutritional targets.
  • Ensure products maintain stability, taste, safety, and target unit economics through commercialization.

Technical Problem Solving

  • Apply food chemistry expertise—focusing on proteins, high-intensity sweeteners, dietary fibers, and binding systems.
  • Troubleshoot formulation failures (e.g., texture changes, binding issues, flavor off-notes, shelf-life kinetics).
  • Stay current on emergent food technologies and processing methods relevant to high-protein matrixes.

Lab Excellence & Compliance

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant lab environment in line with food safety standards.
  • Collaborate with QA and regulatory teams regarding compliant ingredient selection and labeling.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1+ years of food science, R&D, or product development experience in food/CPG.
  • Technical Skills: Strong benchtop formulation experience; direct experience with high-protein systems preferred.
  • Attributes: High curiosity around ingredient functionality, strong problem-solving agility, and a meticulous eye for detail.
  • Communication: Ability to distill and present complex technical data to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Culture Fit: Self-aware, adaptable, and motivated to build a mission-driven health brand in a fast-paced environment.
