As Wirecutter's senior style editor, you'll be responsible for guiding and expanding our style and accessories coverage to become an indispensable destination for readers looking for straightforward, engaging, and smart advice to help them develop their personal style. You will lead a team of writers and work closely with the photo and video team, audience development team, and lifestyle writers and editors to make sure our coverage is helpful, engaging, and up-to-date. We ask that you have writing, editing, and management skills, as well as subject-matter expertise.

You have sharp editing skills and a firm grasp of all categories of style, including clothing basics, fashion accessories, bags and carrying items, shoes, and more. You have a strong knowledge of the style landscape, whether menswear or womenswear. You're a fashion expert who knows brands and trends as well as how to apply a skeptic's eye to the industry's claims at large. You know that when it comes to personal style, there's no such thing as the best product for everyone, but you understand how Wirecutter's method of rigorous testing, thorough reporting, and deep beat expertise can help readers find the perfect option that fits their needs. You also understand the importance of journalistic standards and integrity, and you're passionate about cutting through the clutter to provide inclusive recommendations at any budget.

A successful person in this role will be comfortable creating an exciting guide-based coverage plan while managing a team and collaborating with colleagues across Wirecutter's newsroom. You have a solid network of fashion freelancers, publicists, and sources, and an instinct for what makes a good style story. As a Wirecutter journalist, you'll also recognize the importance of considering those with different needs and diverse perspectives.

This is a hybrid position, based out of our LIC office in NYC and includes regular attendance in the office.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan coverage for style and accessories guides and projects over the course of the year
  • With the editorial director, execute strategy for our coverage and manage a team of writers in execution of dynamic style content, including guides, short-form, and multi-platform coverage
  • Assign projects to freelance and staff writers as needed, and manage them on a per-project basis
  • Manage editors and writers as direct reports, set clear expectations, facilitate performance feedback, and support learning and development
  • Manage editorial process and serve as top or lead editor for guides, short-form journalism, and other projects that fall under your area of coverage
  • Approve ideas from your team and use data to support pitches and to monitor performance
  • Contribute original ideas to test planning, suggest creative reporting strategies, challenge writers' assumptions
  • Interact with our reader community through multiple channels, including social, comments, and through our community team
  • May be required to attend trade shows and product news events as needed
  • Perform related work as assigned
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the editorial director of lifestyle

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of professional editing experience and at least two years managing editors and/or writers, with a proven ability to effectively manage projects and direct reports
  • The ability to write clearly and accessibly about topics for lay audiences, and edit with an eye for helping others do the same
  • Deep knowledge of fashion subject matter and clear sense of good aesthetic taste

ย Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and people management skills
  • An effective organizational system with the ability to manage multiple projects at various stages in the publication process
  • A commitment to high standards of reporting and accuracy
  • An understanding of how to use web analytics data to make editorial decisions

Please include a cover letter and your resume/CV.

Additional Compensation and Benefits:

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
