Job description

Summary:

Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts)department of Fashion Design + Merchandising is recruiting a poolof applicants on an ongoing basis for adjunct teaching positions.The Department of Fashion Design + Merchandising will consult the adjunctapplicant pool and contact qualified applicants whose credentialsmatch our specific teaching needs on an as-needed basis.

Possible adjunct opportunities could include teaching a course(s)in any of the areas of study offered by the Department of FashionDesign + Merchandising. A link to fashion course descriptions fromVCU's Undergraduate Bulletin can be found at https://bulletin.vcu.edu/azcourses/fash/.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1. Market and trend research experience – regularly shopping theEuropean and Asian markets, product awareness and competitivepricing.
  • 2. Familiarity with NYC garment district suppliers (fabric, trims,novelty goods) and resources.
  • 3. Address concept development and presentation skills: create moodand inspiration packages- using primary and secondary sources- bothtraditionally and digitally.
  • 4. Generate iteration of color, trim, and textile palettes.
  • 5. Proficiency in patternmaking, draping and construction-knowledge of knits and wovens.
  • 6. Strong visual and communication skills, experience in garmentsourcing, excellent Adobe Creative Suites (specifically Illustratorand Photoshop) Microsoft Excel, and PDM skills.
  • 7. Ability to develop original surface design, print repeats andtextile manipulation.
  • 8. Create action and technical flats with specifications.
  • 9. Establish technical package templates.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 1. Terminal degree (MFA in a related field or a MBA), or BFA, BA,or BS with additional training and/or professional experience thatequates and/or parallels the artistic development expected in aterminal degree holder.
  • 2. Appropriate teaching experience and/or strong oral presentationand communication skills.
  • 3. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences,or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
