What is a farm with housing?

Farm jobs with housing are positions on farms where the employer provides on-site living accommodations for employees. These jobs can range from seasonal work like harvesting crops to year-round positions such as livestock management or equipment operation. Housing is typically offered to attract workers from outside the immediate area and can vary from shared bunkhouses to private units. This arrangement helps reduce commuting time and costs, and can be especially attractive in rural locations where rental options are limited.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a farm worker with housing?

To thrive as a Farm Worker with Housing, you need hands-on agricultural skills, physical stamina, and often a basic understanding of crop or livestock management, though formal education is not always required. Familiarity with farm machinery, irrigation systems, and safety protocols is typically important, and some employers may require pesticide handling certifications. Reliability, adaptability, and strong teamwork skills help workers adjust to changing tasks and work effectively with others. These competencies are essential to ensure productive, safe, and efficient farm operations, especially when living and working on-site.

What should I expect in terms of work-life balance when accepting a farm job that includes housing?

Farm jobs with housing often involve early mornings, long days, and a variety of physically demanding tasks, especially during peak planting or harvest seasons. Since housing is provided on-site, you may be expected to be flexible with your hours and occasionally be available for urgent tasks outside of regular shifts. However, many employers strive to maintain reasonable schedules and offer time off to ensure workers don’t experience burnout. Living on the farm can foster a close-knit team environment and reduce commuting stress, but it's important to clarify expectations about work hours and personal time before accepting the position.

Job description

OVERVIEW
The Farm Operations Manager supports the safe, efficient, and consistent operation of Green City Force's Eco-Hub sites
across New York City Housing Authority communities. Reporting to the Senior Farm Operations Manager, this hands-on role
helps translate farm plans and site priorities into coordinated daily execution across multiple locations.
The Manager serves as a flexible operational resource for Eco-Hub Coordinators, Operations Associates, Eco-Hub Fellows,
Service staff, and Corps Members. The role requires frequent travel between sites, regular driving of GCF vehicles, strong
follow-through, and a willingness to step into changing operational needs during the growing season and throughout the
year.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Farm Operations and Site Support
  • Support implementation of year-round crop plans, seasonal transitions, planting schedules, harvest activities, and
general site maintenance across all Eco-Hub locations.
  • Provide hands-on coverage and operational support at sites experiencing staffing gaps, high-priority needs, special
    projects, or increased program activity.
  • Complete routine site assessments and communicate maintenance, safety, production, infrastructure, and supply needs
to the Senior Farm Operations Manager.
  • Support construction, repair, and upkeep of farm infrastructure, including growing beds, pathways, compost systems,
irrigation, high tunnels, storage areas, shade structures, and related site assets.
  • Safely operate and maintain farm tools and equipment and reinforce proper tool use among staff and program
    participants.

Transportation, Supplies, and Logistics
  • Drive GCF cargo vans and other authorized vehicles throughout New York City to transport staff, Corps Members, tools,
    equipment, supplies, produce, and materials.
  • Coordinate pickups, deliveries, and distribution of supplies across Eco-Hub sites, the GCF office, vendors, and partner
    locations.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle, delivery, inventory, and equipment records and promptly report maintenance or safety
    concerns.
  • Support ordering, receiving, organizing, and tracking seeds, seedlings, soil, compost, tools, personal protective
    equipment, and other operational supplies.
  • Help ensure that storage areas, vehicles, and shared equipment remain organized, secure, and ready for use.

Team and Program Support
  • Work closely with Eco-Hub Coordinators and Operations Associates to clarify daily priorities, troubleshoot operational
    barriers, and complete cross-site projects.
  • Provide hands-on instruction and real-time coaching to Corps Members and Eco-Hub Fellows on urban agriculture, site
maintenance, tool safety, and professional work practices.
  • Support staff onboarding and refresher training related to farm operations, vehicle use, site systems, and standard operating procedures.
  • Reinforce a positive, productive, and asset-based learning environment for young adults and community members.
  • Provide coverage during program activities, community events, farm stands, volunteer days, training, and other special initiatives as needed.

Safety, Data, and Coordination
  • Help ensure sites meet GCF expectations for safety, cleanliness, accessibility, appearance, and compliance.
  • Accurately track and submit operational information, including production, harvest, inventory, project completion,
    incidents, and site needs.
  • Participate in regular operations meetings and communicate progress, risks, and support needs clearly and promptly.
  • Coordinate with Service, Career Services, community engagement, contractors, and external partners to support
    successful site activities and projects.
  • Perform other duties aligned with farm operations and program needs.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
  • At least 3 years of experience in urban agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, facilities, field operations, construction,
logistics, or a related hands-on environment.
  • Valid driver's license held for at least six months, a safe driving record, and comfort driving a cargo van throughout New
    York City.
  • Ability to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule during the growing season, including occasional early mornings and
    evenings.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, work across multiple sites, and follow projects through to
    completion.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and sound judgment in fast-moving field environments.
  • Ability to safely operate, maintain, and teach others to use common farm tools and equipment.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to support colleagues in different roles without
    losing accountability for results.
  • Experience working with young adults and/or frontline communities; commitment to an asset-based, culturally
    responsive approach.
  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors in varied weather conditions, including lifting and moving supplies and
    equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort using Google Workspace and basic tracking tools to document work and communicate across teams.
  • OSHA and CPR/First Aid certification preferred; GCF may provide required training.
