What is a farm ranch?

A Farm Ranch job involves managing and maintaining agricultural land used for farming and livestock. Responsibilities may include planting crops, caring for animals, repairing equipment, and overseeing daily operations. Workers may operate machinery, monitor irrigation systems, and ensure the health of livestock. Depending on the size of the ranch, tasks can range from manual labor to business management. Experience in agriculture, animal husbandry, and machinery operation is often beneficial for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a farm ranch position?

To thrive in a Farm Ranch role, you need hands-on experience with agricultural practices, animal husbandry, and general maintenance, often acquired through on-the-job training or agricultural coursework. Familiarity with tractors, irrigation systems, livestock management software, and sometimes a commercial driver's license (CDL) are commonly required. Working as part of a small, close-knit team is common, which allows for strong camaraderie and skill-building. The fast pace and diverse daily responsibilities offer plenty of opportunities to gain hands-on experience and advance to supervisory or specialized roles over time.

Dairy & Ranch Hand
Ballerina Farm
Kamas, Utah |On-site
Full-time
About Ballerina Farm
Ballerina Farm is a family-run business rooted in a love of family, hard work, craftsmanship, and life close to the land. Located in the mountains of Utah, what began as a family sharing their farm life and love of food has grown into a growing brand with a strong community of customers across the country. Today, Ballerina Farm spans agriculture, food production, retail, e-commerce, hospitality, and a growing collection of products and experiences inspired by the farm. We take pride in creating things with intention, quality, and care-from the food we produce to the products we offer and the experiences we create for our customers. At the heart of Ballerina Farm is a desire to share the beauty, simplicity, and richness of farm life with people everywhere.
The Role
Ballerina Farm is looking for a hardworking, dependable, and hands-on Dairy & Ranch Hand to support the daily operations of our farm, dairy, and agricultural properties in Kamas, Utah.
This is a physically active role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, caring for animals, operating equipment, and being part of the day-to-day work that keeps a working farm running smoothly. The ideal candidate is comfortable getting their hands dirty, takes pride in doing things the right way, and can work independently while also being a reliable member of the farm team.
Prior experience feeding and caring for dairy cows and managing manure/compost operations is required.
What You'll Do
  • Feed and care for dairy cows according to established feeding schedules and animal-care standards.
  • Assist with daily livestock care, including monitoring animals, maintaining clean and safe environments, and identifying and communicating any health or behavioral concerns.
  • Manage manure collection, handling, movement, and composting operations.
  • Monitor and maintain compost areas to support proper decomposition, organization, and efficient use of farm resources.
  • Operate tractors, loaders, mowers, irrigation equipment, and other farm machinery safely and effectively.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and communicate maintenance or repair needs.
  • Assist with irrigation systems, including setting up, monitoring, moving, and maintaining irrigation equipment.
  • Support general farm and ranch maintenance, including fencing, gates, animal areas, grounds, and other infrastructure.
  • Assist with seasonal agricultural work and changing farm priorities as needed.
  • Help maintain the farmstand, including stocking, cleaning, organizing, and preparing the space for customers.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, moving, and organizing feed, supplies, equipment, and other materials.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas across the farm and dairy.
  • Work closely with farm leadership and other team members to ensure daily priorities are completed efficiently.
  • Respond appropriately to changing weather, animal, equipment, and operational needs.
  • Perform other farm and ranch duties as assigned.

What You'll Need
  • Previous hands-on experience feeding and caring for dairy cows highly is preferred.
  • Previous experience with manure management and compost operations is highly preferred.
  • Previous farm, ranch, dairy, livestock, or agricultural experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience safely operating tractors, loaders, mowers, or other agricultural equipment.
  • Basic understanding of animal care and livestock handling.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative without constant supervision.
  • Dependable, punctual, and willing to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the farm.
  • Strong attention to safety, cleanliness, and proper equipment operation.
  • Positive, team-oriented attitude and willingness to jump in wherever needed.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and sun.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, and work on uneven or muddy terrain for extended periods.
  • Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, and pull feed, hay, equipment, buckets, and other materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to safely handle and work around livestock, including cows and other farm animals.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks such as feeding, cleaning, milking, moving supplies, and maintaining animal areas.
  • Ability to safely operate and work around farm equipment, tools, gates, fencing, and other ranch infrastructure.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, or other equipment as needed.
  • Ability to maintain balance and mobility while working on uneven, wet, muddy, or slippery surfaces.
  • Ability to work around dust, hay, manure, dirt, mud, and other typical farm and ranch conditions.
  • Ability to respond quickly and safely to animals, equipment, or changing conditions in the work environment.

What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means being someone the farm team can count on every day. You'll take ownership of your responsibilities, care for the animals with consistency and attention, keep equipment and farm areas operating safely and efficiently, and step in wherever you're needed to help keep the farm running.
This is a great opportunity for someone who genuinely enjoys farm life, working with animals, operating equipment, and being part of a hands-on agricultural operation.
Schedule
This is a full-time position working approximately 5½-6 days per week in Kamas, Utah. Because this is a working farm and dairy, the schedule may vary based on animal care, weather, seasonal demands, and farm operations. Animal care responsibilities require flexibility and reliability, including partial weekends.
Perks & Benefits
  • Paid Time Off
  • Health benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and more.
