What is a farm ranch?

A Farm Ranch job involves managing and maintaining agricultural land used for farming and livestock. Responsibilities may include planting crops, caring for animals, repairing equipment, and overseeing daily operations. Workers may operate machinery, monitor irrigation systems, and ensure the health of livestock. Depending on the size of the ranch, tasks can range from manual labor to business management. Experience in agriculture, animal husbandry, and machinery operation is often beneficial for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a farm ranch position?

To thrive in a Farm Ranch role, you need hands-on experience with agricultural practices, animal husbandry, and general maintenance, often acquired through on-the-job training or agricultural coursework. Familiarity with tractors, irrigation systems, livestock management software, and sometimes a commercial driver's license (CDL) are commonly required. Strong work ethic, adaptability, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this position. These abilities are crucial for managing day-to-day operations efficiently and ensuring farm productivity and safety.

What are the typical work hours and conditions like for a farm ranch position?

Farm Ranch roles often involve early mornings and long days, especially during planting, harvest, or calving seasons, and may require weekend or holiday work depending on livestock and crop needs. The work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, so candidates should be comfortable with physically demanding tasks and changing environments. Working as part of a small, close-knit team is common, which allows for strong camaraderie and skill-building. The fast pace and diverse daily responsibilities offer plenty of opportunities to gain hands-on experience and advance to supervisory or specialized roles over time.

Job description

Job Title: Yard Worker

Job Description

This role supports an equipment and tool rental operation by maintaining the yard and shop, preparing equipment for rental, and assisting mechanics and customers. You will work primarily outdoors and in the shop, operating and cleaning heavy equipment, performing general labor tasks, and helping ensure equipment is safe, clean, and ready for use.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain the yard and lot to keep the site safe, organized, and presentable.
  • Clean, inspect, and operate rental machines to ensure they are in good working condition before and after use.
  • Refuel equipment and ensure all machines have adequate fuel and basic fluids prior to rental.
  • Prepare equipment for rentals by staging, moving, and positioning machines as directed.
  • Drive and maneuver heavy construction equipment such as tractors, bobcats, forklifts, and similar machinery safely around the yard and shop.
  • Assist shop mechanics with tasks such as moving equipment, basic mechanical support, and general shop upkeep.
  • Support customers by helping them locate, load, and unload equipment and by providing basic operational guidance as directed by the team.
  • Perform general labor and odd jobs around the shop and yard as needed to support daily operations.
  • Follow safety procedures and company guidelines while operating equipment and working in the yard and shop.
  • Work collaboratively with a small team of yard and shop employees to ensure efficient daily operations.

Essential Skills

  • 2–3 years of experience operating construction or tractor equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate heavy equipment such as tractors, bobcats, forklifts, or similar machinery.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand basic equipment functions and maintenance needs.
  • Experience in a farm or ranch environment or similar setting involving heavy equipment and outdoor labor.
  • Comfort working outdoors in a physically demanding role that includes yard work, heavy lifting, and general labor.
  • Ability to work with customers and mechanics in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Reliability and willingness to follow safety protocols and operational procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a laborer, helper, farm hand, or yard worker.
  • Experience in construction, concrete work, or related trades.
  • Forklift experience or comfort learning to operate forklifts under supervision.
  • Strong desire to grow into more advanced mechanical responsibilities over time.
  • Willingness to learn equipment maintenance and repair tasks as training is provided.

Why Work Here?

You will join a team that invests in your growth and offers a clear path from general yard work into more advanced mechanical responsibilities. This contract-to-hire opportunity provides hands-on training, exposure to a wide range of equipment, and the chance to build valuable mechanical and equipment-operation skills. You will work closely with experienced mechanics and teammates who support learning, development, and long-term career progression.

Work Environment

You will work at an equipment and tool rental facility that includes both an indoor shop and an outdoor yard on a dealership-style site. The team typically consists of 5–6 employees in the shop, with most day-to-day tasks performed outside. The role involves working in all types of weather, including rain, snow, heat, and cold, so comfort with inclement conditions is essential. The standard schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a focus on hands-on, physical work around heavy equipment and machinery.
