Job Summaryย 

Thistle Farms is a nonprofit justice enterprise dedicated to helping women survivors recover and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. We do this by providing a safe place to live, meaningful jobs, and a lifelong sisterhood of support.ย 

The General Manager is a key leader responsible for ushering in and supporting the next era of the Cafรฉ at Thistle Farms,ย one that deepens our commitment to healing, economic opportunity, and community connection. The Generalย Manager leadsย all Cafรฉ operations, includingย supervision of the Head Chef, the front-of-house team andย the Cafรฉ and Catering & Eventsย team, toย ensure operational excellence, financial sustainability, and a welcoming, mission-centered environment for guests, employees, volunteers, and community partners.ย 

At the heart of this role is the development of people. The General Managerย isย responsible forย training, coaching, and supporting a teamย largely madeย up ofย individualsย in recovery,ย ensuring a workplace that is trauma-informed, growth-oriented, and grounded in dignity. This leader creates pathways for skill-building, confidence, and advancement, while holding clear standards that support both individual success and strong business outcomes.ย 

The General Manager also plays a critical role in positioning the Cafรฉ as a true โ€œthird placeโ€ for the community,ย a welcoming, inclusive space beyond home and work where people gather, connect, and experience the mission of Thistle Farms in a tangible way.ย 

Direct Reports:ย Head Chef,ย Front-of-Houseย Team,ย Catering & Events Coordinator, and Banquetย Managerย 

Duties & Responsibilities:ย 

Operational Leadership & Cafรฉ Managementย 

  • Oversee all daily cafรฉ operations, ensuring a high standard of hospitality, efficiency, cleanliness, and guest satisfactionย ย 

  • Lead front-of-house operations including service standards, staffing coordination, scheduling, and workflow managementย ย 

  • Ensure alignment and collaboration between front-of-house, kitchen, catering, and events teamsย 

  • Create andย maintainย operational systems, policies, and procedures that support consistency and accountabilityย ย 

  • Monitor and improve operational performance, guest experience, and team effectivenessย 

  • Directly manages theย Headย Chef,ย who overseesย the creation, development, and delivery of all food and beverage offerings across the Cafรฉ, catering, events, and afternoon tea serviceย 

  • Partners with the Head Chef toย coordinate, manage and develop theย Catering and Sales Teamย 

  • Administratively, the Generalย Manager:ย 

  • Handles employee disciplineย in accordance withย company policyย 

  • Creates weekly staff and volunteer schedulesย 

  • Finalizes biweekly payrollย 

  • Approves mileage and reimbursementsย 

  • Manages time-off requestsย 

Team Leadership & Staff Developmentย 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of staff and volunteers, many of whom are in recovery, with a trauma-informed and strengths-based approachย 

  • Create a culture of belonging, accountability, and growth that supports high retention and meaningful employment pathwaysย 

  • Design and oversee training programs that build both technical skills and confidence, with clear pathways for advancementย

Guest Experience + Community Buildingย 

  • Ensure an exceptional, consistent, and welcoming guest experience rooted in hospitality and careย 

  • Champion the Cafรฉ as a โ€œthird placeโ€ for the community,ย warm, inviting, and reflective of Thistle Farmsโ€™ mission and valuesย 

  • Support workforce development and social enterprise initiatives connected to the cafรฉย 

  • Represent the cafรฉ professionally in the community and at organizational eventsย ย 

  • Collaborate with organizational leadership on initiatives that expand the cafรฉโ€™s impact and visibilityย 

  • Regularly evaluate customer experience through feedback and implement improvementsย 

  • Model and recognize outstanding hospitality and serviceย 

Catering, Events & Hospitality Oversightย 

  • Provide leadership and oversight for catering operations, afternoon tea experiences, private events, and community gatheringsย ย 

  • Partner with the Head Chef and Catering & Events team to ensure successful planning and execution of all eventsย ย 

  • Support the growth and promotion of catering and hospitality offerings as a revenue-generating social enterpriseย ย 

  • Ensureย event experiences reflect the mission, brand, and hospitality standards of Thistle Farmsย ย 

  • Develop relationships with community partners, organizations, and guests to expand awareness and engagementย 

Operations + Financial Performanceย 

  • Manage cafรฉ operational performance with attention to revenue growth, labor management, and expense controlย ย 

  • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planningย ย 

  • Monitor key operational and financial metrics,ย identifyingย opportunities for efficiency and growthย ย 

  • Support pricing strategy and operational decisions in partnership with the Head Chefย ย 

  • Review and approve operational purchases and vendor relationships within budget guidelinesย ย 

  • Contribute to the continued development and sustainability of the cafรฉ as a nonprofit social enterpriseย ย 

  • Manage administrative functions including hiring, scheduling, payroll, budgeting, inventory, and financial reportingย 

  • Maintain POS systems and ensure operational accuracyย 

Food, Beverage + Product Excellenceย 

  • Partner with theย Head Chefย on menu development to ensure offerings are fresh, high-quality, and aligned with brand and guest expectationsย 

  • Ensure consistency and excellence in all food and beverage executionย 

  • Collaborateย with the Head Chef toย identifyย local suppliers and community partners to source ingredients and products that reflect values and support artisansย 

Compliance + Safetyย 

  • Ensure all food safety, health, and safety standards are met and consistently upheldย 

  • Maintain proper use and care of all Cafรฉ equipmentย 

  • Exercise sound judgment in resolving operational and personnel issuesย

  • Proven experience in restaurant or hospitality management; experience in nonprofit or social enterprise environments strongly preferredย 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop teams,ย ideally with experience supporting individuals in recovery or navigating trauma-informed environmentsย 

  • Strong financial acumen and ability to manage budgets and interpret performance metricsย 

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skillsย
