What will your job look like?

The Farebox Technician is responsible for providing minor maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and operational support for fareboxes installed on transit revenue vehicles. This position ensures fare collection equipment remains functional, reliable, and available for daily transit operations.

Location: Bakersfield, CA

Service: Kern County Transit

Starting Pay Rate: $35 per hour

What You'll Do (Essential Functions)

  • Perform minor service, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on fareboxes installed on transit vehicles

  • Diagnose farebox malfunctions and determine appropriate corrective actions

  • Conduct routine inspections to verify farebox functionality and performance

  • Remove, install, and replace farebox components as needed using County-supplied replacement parts

  • Respond promptly to farebox issues affecting vehicles in service to minimize operational disruptions

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, maintenance activities, and parts usage

  • Coordinate with transit operations and maintenance staff regarding farebox performance issues

  • Follow manufacturer specifications, safety procedures, and established maintenance practices

  • Assist in identifying recurring equipment problems and recommend corrective measures

  • Maintain current knowledge of fare collection systems and related technologies

  • Other duties as assigned

What We're Looking For (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

  • Knowledge of electronic fare collection equipment and related systems

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturer documentation

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently and respond effectively to equipment service requests

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to diagnose and repair minor equipment malfunctions

  • Basic computer and recordkeeping skills

  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and repair records

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • Experience performing basic electronic, mechanical, or transit equipment maintenance

  • Basic computer and recordkeeping skills

  • Completion of manufacturer-provided training for fareboxes or the ability to successfully obtain and maintain required certification (we will provide training)

  • Possess valid authorization to work in the United States

  • Must be able to pass a DOT Physical and pre-employment drug screening

  • Must pass criminal background check and investigation & Motor Vehicle Record check
