Job description
About the Role
General Motors is seeking a Facilities Electrical Engineer to help operate, improve, and expand the electrical infrastructure that enables safe, reliable vehicle manufacturing. This plant-facing role partners with Facilities, Maintenance, Manufacturing Engineering, Safety, contractors, utilities, and plant leadership to maintain electrical systems, deliver facility projects, and strengthen electrical safety performance.
The successful candidate will combine sound electrical-engineering judgment with practical field execution. They will work across active manufacturing environments, respond to urgent plant needs, and lead work that protects people, supports production, and improves long-term facility reliability.
What You Will Do
- Serve as a technical resource for plant electrical systems, including high-, medium-, and low-voltage distribution.
- Support safe operation and maintenance of substations, switchgear, feeders, power panels, lighting systems, emergency power, and related facility electrical equipment.
- Maintain and improve power-distribution schematics, power-panel records, lighting databases, arc-flash information, and other engineering documentation.
- Develop, review, and approve electrical switching plans, lockout and isolation requirements, risk assessments, and pre-task planning documents.
- Apply GM Electrical Safety Written Program requirements and help ensure safe-work practices are understood and followed by employees, skilled trades, contractors, and service providers.
- Coordinate planned electrical outages and restoration activities to minimize risk, downtime, and lost production.
- Investigate electrical incidents, equipment issues, and emerging hazards; identify corrective actions and track them through closure.
- Plan and support preventive and predictive maintenance activities, including substation, feeder, switchgear, and facility electrical-system work.
- Lead or support facility electrical projects from scope development and cost estimating through procurement, installation, commissioning, and closeout.
- Review electrical designs, drawings, specifications, contractor work, and field installations for code compliance, safety, quality, and maintainability.
- Coordinate with local utilities and external service providers on electrical-system testing, maintenance, upgrades, and outage planning.
- Support energy, sustainability, reliability, and risk-management initiatives involving plant electrical systems.
- Participate in engineering, facilities coordination, emergency-response, electrical-safety, and continuous-improvement activities.
- Communicate technical issues and recommendations clearly to plant leadership, skilled trades, union partners, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
- Share lessons learned and help standardize effective electrical-safety and facility-engineering practices across GM sites.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Professional experience with industrial, manufacturing, utility, or commercial electrical systems.
- Working knowledge of electrical distribution, electrical safety, grounding, overcurrent protection, and safe isolation practices.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, equipment documentation, and construction drawings.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, project-management, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively in an operating manufacturing plant and respond to time-sensitive issues.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience maintaining engineering records and technical databases.
- Commitment to GM safety expectations, ethical conduct, and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience
- Professional Engineer license or progress toward licensure.
- Experience with medium-voltage distribution, substations, switchgear, feeders, or industrial power systems.
- Experience with arc-flash studies, incident-energy labeling, electrical system coordination, or power-quality analysis.
- Experience developing or reviewing switching procedures, lockout documentation, electrical safe-work practices, or energized-work controls.
- Experience supporting electrical systems in an automotive or large-scale manufacturing facility.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, facility-management or computerized-maintenance systems, power-monitoring systems, and electrical engineering databases.
- Experience leading contractors, coordinating utility work, or managing construction and facility-improvement projects.
- Knowledge of emergency power, lighting, fire and security systems, data-center electrical systems, or industrial communications infrastructure.
- Experience applying GM operating systems, standardized work, layered audits, problem-solving, or continuous-improvement methods.
