Fab Tech information

What is a typical work environment like for a Fab Tech?

Fab Techs generally work in cleanroom environments within semiconductor fabrication facilities, where strict protocols are followed to protect sensitive equipment and products from contamination. The role often involves standing for extended periods, wearing specialized protective coveralls, and working as part of a larger team that includes technicians, engineers, and quality assurance professionals. Shifts can be structured around 24/7 operations, which may require night or weekend work, depending on the employer. While the environment is highly controlled and safety-oriented, many find it rewarding due to the hands-on nature of the work and the opportunity to help create cutting-edge technology.

What is a Fab Tech job?

A Fab Tech, or Fabrication Technician, is responsible for assembling, maintaining, and repairing manufacturing equipment, often in industries like semiconductors, aerospace, or metal fabrication. They work with tools, machinery, and technical drawings to produce or maintain parts and components. Fab Techs may also troubleshoot issues, ensure quality control, and follow safety protocols. Their role is critical in maintaining production efficiency and product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fab Tech position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fab Tech, you need a solid understanding of semiconductor manufacturing processes, cleanroom protocols, and hands-on experience with precision equipment, often supported by a technical associate degree or equivalent training. Familiarity with process control software, scanning electron microscopes, and automated fabrication systems is typically required, and certifications such as IPC or SEMI may be advantageous. Attention to detail, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help individuals stand out in this role. These competencies are critical for maintaining product quality, minimizing errors, and ensuring smooth operation in high-tech manufacturing environments.

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.
Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.
Summary
The Fab Support Team Lead supervises shift technicians responsible for maintaining and repairing Fab Support systems-including vacuum pumps, abatement units, chillers, heat exchangers, and liquid delivery equipment-to ensure reliable manufacturing operations. This role leads safety, quality, and equipment performance initiatives, coordinates preventative maintenance, drives continuous improvement, and partners with engineering, facilities, and operations teams to support tool uptime and operational stability across Fab 6.
Responsibilities
  • Lead shift technicians in safely performing maintenance and recovery activities on Fab Support equipment, ensuring compliance with all EHS requirements, JHAs, and site procedures.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules, equipment downtime, and cross-functional support with engineering, process areas, and OEM suppliers.
  • Monitor equipment performance, analyze system data, and drive corrective actions to improve reliability, uptime, and cost efficiency.
  • Communicate tool status, risks, safety issues, and operational changes to stakeholders; escalate Fab-impacting concerns promptly.
  • Support documentation accuracy by maintaining and improving PMs, procedures, JHAs, and technical work instructions.
  • Mentor and develop team members (shift technicians) through coaching, performance management, and professional development planning.
  • Facilitate problem-solving activities, lead root-cause investigations, and support TPM initiatives to strengthen equipment effectiveness.
  • Track action items, prioritize tasks across the shift, and ensure timely completion of maintenance work and area commitments.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in leading technical teams within a semiconductor manufacturing environment - with demonstrated ability to manage performance, coach employees (technicians), and coordinate work across shifts.
  • Strong mechanical/electrical troubleshooting experience with working knowledge of AC/DC circuits, facilities utilities, and Fab Support systems (pump, chiller, abatement, liquid source delivery).
  • Proficiency with MS Office and basic data analysis tools, with strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing operations or maintenance of Fab Support systems (vacuum pumps, abatement, chillers, LDS).
  • Experience with TPM programs, and structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys, KT). Background in managing maintenance documentation, EHS compliance, and technical procedure development.
  • Related Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience;
  • Experience and/or interest in developing Agentic AI workflows into current or future processes.
