What is an FAA Certification Engineer?

FAA Certification Engineers are professionals who work to ensure that aircraft, aviation products, and components meet the safety and regulatory standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). They are responsible for guiding the certification process, preparing technical documentation, and coordinating with regulatory authorities. Their work includes evaluating designs, overseeing testing, and ensuring compliance with all relevant FAA regulations to guarantee that aviation products can be legally and safely operated.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an FAA Certification Engineer?

To thrive as an FAA Certification Engineer, you typically need a degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering, a strong understanding of FAA regulations, and experience with certification processes. Familiarity with tools such as CAD software, compliance tracking systems, and knowledge of airworthiness standards is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help in collaborating with regulatory bodies and cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that products meet stringent safety standards and regulatory requirements, which is critical for the aviation industry's safety and compliance.

What teams and departments does an FAA Certification Engineer typically collaborate with?

FAA Certification Engineers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including design engineers, manufacturing, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance departments. Collaboration often involves interpreting regulations, reviewing technical documentation, and participating in meetings with both internal and external stakeholders, such as the FAA itself. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as certification projects require aligning technical solutions with regulatory requirements across various functions. This collaborative environment helps ensure that all certification milestones are met efficiently and in compliance with federal aviation standards.

What is the difference between Faa Certification Engineer vs Avionics Technician?

AspectFaa Certification EngineerAvionics Technician
CertificationsFAA certifications, engineering degreesFAA certifications, technical diplomas
Work EnvironmentDesign approval, certification processes, regulatory complianceMaintenance, troubleshooting, repair of avionics systems
Industry UsageAircraft certification, regulatory agencies, aerospace companiesAircraft maintenance, repair shops, airlines

The Faa Certification Engineer focuses on certifying aircraft and components to meet FAA standards, working on approval processes and regulatory compliance. In contrast, an Avionics Technician primarily performs maintenance and repairs on avionics systems. While both roles require FAA certifications and work within the aerospace industry, their responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

This role is responsible for ensuring the structural integrity of metallic and composite airframe components through detailed analysis, testing, and certification substantiation.

You will work closely with design engineering, loads, materials & processes, manufacturing, structural test, suppliers, and certification teams to develop robust airframe structures that meet performance, safety, and FAA certification requirements. The ideal candidate combines deep structural analysis expertise with strong engineering judgment and the ability to influence aircraft design decisions throughout the product lifecycle.

What You'll Do
  • Support development of major airframe structures from preliminary design through certification, production launch, and manufacturing ramp-up
  • Perform static strength, fatigue, and durability analyses for metallic and composite aircraft structures
  • Develop structural substantiation methods and analysis plans supporting FAA Part 23 type certification
  • Create and validate finite element models using FEMAP/Nastran or equivalent analysis tools
  • Perform detailed hand calculations using industry-standard methodologies and references including:
    • Bruhn
    • Niu
    • Roark
    • ESDU
    • Classical mechanics of materials approaches
  • Collaborate with loads, design, materials & processes, manufacturing, structural test, and certification teams throughout the entire development process
  • Support trade studies and structural design optimization activities
  • Define structural analysis requirements and certification substantiation plans
  • Review and approve design dispositions and engineering analyses
  • Support component, subassembly, and full-scale structural testing activities, including:
    • Test planning
