Job description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care, is seeking a Researcher.
The Davis lab (PI, Brian Davis, PhD) is seeking a Researcher to provide dedicated scientific expertise to contribute to the lab's ongoing research productivity. Under the supervision of the PI and others, the successful candidate will perform experiments and collaboratively execute a project(s) with other staff scientists. Particularly, the candidate will take a lead on animal studies in the lab, including study setup, institutional approval, survival surgery in rodents, and live animal imaging. The successful candidate will also contribute to other projects through assisting trainees (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, graduate students) and faculty members in the lab. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to stem cell research and apply techniques, including adult stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culture and differentiation, gene editing in vitro and in vivo. The specific techniques include, but are not limited to, cell culture, flow cytometry and cell sorting, DNA/RNA/protein extraction and quantification, histology, and microscopy.
General Responsibilities
  • As a Researcher, you will play a key role in driving scientific discovery by independently leading and executing research projects.
  • This professional-level position demands a high degree of expertise and judgement in designing studies, analyzing data, and may involve assistants in publishing findings.
  • You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and contribute to grant writing and securing funding for future research.
  • Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals.
  2. Plans and designs studies with supervisor.
  3. Collects, enters, summarizes, and analyzes data.
  4. Monitors results, detects and reports unusual outcomes, and suggests modifications.
  5. Performs maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range : $50,050 - $65,065
Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field OR Bachelor's degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Associate's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required or High School diploma or GED and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferences
  • The desired candidate must have expertise in animal handling and survival surgery.
  • The preferred applicant will have significant experience with animal study setup, institutional approval, as well as human cell culture and aseptic handling.
  • Applicants who have experience with basic molecular and cellular biology techniques, flow cytometry or FACS, as well as basic research histology and microscopic techniques, are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • The desired candidate should also have: the ability to work with a high degree of independence, frequently use discretion and independent judgment in the design and execution of tasks. Initiative and responsibility for the assigned project(s). Overall leadership of the assigned project(s). Ability to work as a team and with a diverse group of people, and to supervise lab operations, junior staff, and trainees. Excellent organization and communication skills. Attention to detail and critical thinking. Strong work ethic and good time management skills.
