How much do expressive arts therapy jobs pay per year?
What is an expressive arts therapist?
An Expressive Arts Therapy job involves using creative modalities like visual arts, music, dance, drama, and writing to help individuals explore emotions, improve mental health, and cope with life challenges. Therapists work in various settings, including hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, and private practice. They guide clients through artistic activities to facilitate self-expression, personal growth, and healing. This field integrates psychology and the arts to support emotional well-being and communication, especially for those who may struggle with traditional talk therapy.
What does an expressive arts therapist do?
A typical workday for an Expressive Arts Therapist involves facilitating individual or group sessions where clients use visual arts, music, movement, or drama as therapeutic tools. You’ll collaborate closely with clients to assess their needs, design appropriate creative interventions, and track therapeutic progress. Documentation and occasional coordination with multidisciplinary teams, such as psychologists, social workers, or educators, are also common. Depending on the setting, you may work in hospitals, schools, community centers, or private practices, tailoring each session to meet the unique needs and goals of your clients.
What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an expressive arts therapist?
To thrive as an Expressive Arts Therapist, you need a background in psychology or counseling, specialized training in expressive arts modalities, and typically a master's degree in expressive arts therapy or a related field. Certification through organizations like the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) is often preferred, and proficiency in facilitating art, music, movement, or drama-based interventions is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, emotional intelligence, and sensitivity are crucial for building trust and rapport with clients. These skills enable therapists to effectively support diverse individuals in using creative processes for healing and growth.

Therapeutic Expressive Arts (TEA) Intern and Volunteer

Job description
YFT Bristow HQ - Bristow, VA 20136
OverviewPosition Type Volunteer/Intern
Roles and ResponsibilitiesAre you passionate about helping others heal through the power of art? Youth for Tomorrow is seeking dedicated Therapeutic Expressive Arts (TEA) and Therapeutic Worship Arts (TWA) interns and volunteers to join our team! This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of youth in need while developing your skills in the expressive arts field. If you're ready to bring creativity, compassion, and a spirit of service to your work, we want to hear from you.
Our Approach
Therapeutic Expressive Arts (TEA) and Therapeutic Worship Arts (TWA) interns and volunteers play a critical role in the therapeutic process of our Youth for Tomorrow residents, harnessing the power of expressive arts to help individuals express and process their emotions. One of their primary responsibilities is to assist Registered Expressive Arts Therapists (REAT) in planning and conducting creative interventions through expressive therapeutic sessions.
The principle of hope and renewal is vital in therapy, and this is beautifully illustrated in Isaiah 40:31, which states, "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." This verse offers a powerful message of resilience and renewal. In the therapeutic context, instilling hope can empower clients to overcome their challenges and envision a positive future. By integrating these biblical principles, therapists can provide a comprehensive and deeply meaningful path to healing.
Roles and Responsibilities of Expressive Arts and Worship Arts Interns and Volunteers:
- Plan and prepare materials for expressive arts sessions, such as visual arts, music, dance, drama, and play therapies, and ensure that the therapeutic environment is supportive and conducive to creativity.
- Facilitate individual and/or group expressive arts sessions, and therapeutic interventions, guiding our residents through various expressive activities while providing encouragement and support.
- Observe and document clients' therapeutic progress.
- Maintain detailed records of each session, noting any significant emotional or behavioral changes, and helping to evaluate the effectiveness of different therapeutic techniques. This documentation is crucial for developing personalized treatment plans and ensuring that each client's needs are being met. Interns might also participate in students' education progress reports and contribute their observations and insights to the broader therapeutic team.
- Be responsible for their professional development. This involves seeking regular supervision from the REAT supervisor, participating in training sessions, and staying up-to-date with the latest research and best practices in the field of expressive therapies.
- Be encouraged to reflect on their experiences, seek feedback, and continuously improve their skills and understanding of how creative arts can be used to foster emotional healing and personal growth.
Qualifications:
· All duties and responsibilities will support meeting the structured program of care outlined in DBHDS and DSS state standards (DBHDS: 12VAC 35-46; DSS: 22 VAC 40-151; 22 VAC 40-131) and the Office of Human Rights according to standard 22 VAC 40-151.
· Must attend all trainings mandated by YFT; must receive and pass Handle with Care and required training before volunteer may be alone with a resident.
· Ability to communicate with children/adolescences openly and nonjudgmental;
