Research Veterinarian

The NHDP is seeking a licensed veterinarian to provide professional veterinary care and oversight for a specialized research animal colony composed of armadillos and mice. This position supports leprosy (Hansen's disease) research through collaboration with NIAID and requires expertise in exotic animal medicine, research compliance, and laboratory animal welfare.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct monthly on-site visits to inspect facilities, provide preventative care, and consult with staff
  • Provide 24-hour availability for emergency consultation and treatment
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled advanced treatments, including survival surgeries
  • Dispense and manage DEA-controlled substances as needed
  • Conduct semiannual program reviews and facility inspections per NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare standards
  • Diagnose, treat, and control diseases in research animal colonies
Required Qualifications:
  • DVM or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited institution
  • Valid veterinary license in the United States
  • Experience with exotic species and research animals (e.g., armadillos, immunocompromised mice)
  • Familiarity with federal animal welfare regulations, including IACUC responsibilities
  • Ability to dispense and manage DEA-controlled substances
