What is an Exercise Science Internship?

An Exercise Science Internship is a supervised practical experience where students or recent graduates in exercise science gain hands-on training in real-world settings. These internships typically take place in fitness centers, rehabilitation clinics, sports teams, or health organizations, allowing interns to apply classroom knowledge to practical situations. Interns may assist with exercise testing, develop fitness programs, observe professionals, and interact with clients or athletes. The goal is to develop professional skills, build a network, and gain valuable experience that can help secure future employment in the exercise science field.

What is the difference between Exercise Science Internship vs Personal Trainer?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Exercise Science Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Exercise Science Intern, you need a solid understanding of exercise physiology, anatomy, and assessment techniques, typically gained through coursework in an exercise science or related degree program. Familiarity with fitness assessment tools, exercise equipment, and data collection systems is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are important soft skills for collaborating with clients and professionals in diverse settings. During an Exercise Science Internship, you can expect to engage in a variety of hands-on activities such as assisting with fitness assessments, developing and supervising exercise programs, and observing or leading group training sessions. These practical experiences not only help you apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, but also allow you to build essential skills in client interaction, program design, and data collection. Collaborating with certified professionals and athletes will also give you valuable insights into different career paths within the field. Job description

Personal Trainer Career Accelerator Program

Fitness Together – Lynnfield, MA

This is not a traditional internship.

The Personal Trainer Career Accelerator Program is a structured, mentorship driven experience designed for individuals preparing to pursue a professional career in personal training.

Interns are immersed in a private, one on one training environment, working alongside experienced coaches to develop real world skills in movement assessment, program design, client communication, and behavior based coaching. This is a hands on learning experience focused on how to coach clients effectively, not just how to write workouts.

Fitness Together specializes in working with adult clients in a private suite setting, emphasizing accountability, personalization, and long term progress.

Interns will gain exposure to real client scenarios and learn how to deliver a high level coaching experience in a professional, appointment based environment.

Interns pursuing certification will have access to a discounted NASM Certified Personal Trainer pathway as part of their professional development.

This program is best suited for candidates who are serious about building a career in fitness and are ready to move beyond theory into practical application.

Top performing interns may be considered for future employment opportunities upon completion.

  • Shadow experienced trainers during personal training sessions
  • Assist with session flow, including warm-ups and basic coaching support
  • Learn and practice movement assessments under supervision
  • Participate in role-play scenarios to develop communication and client engagement skills
  • Complete structured weekly assignments related to program design, behavior change, and client retention
  • Contribute to a client case study and final capstone project
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism in all client-facing interactions

  • Currently in the final 1–2 years of an Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related program or pursuing a career transition into fitness
  • Interest in pursuing a full-time career in personal training or coaching
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with adult clients in a professional setting
  • Prior experience in coaching, teaching, caregiving, athletics, or other people-focused roles preferred
  • Ability to commit approximately 10–20 hours per week for the duration of the program
  • Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and engage in a structured mentorship environment
