Job description

Reports to the Manager/Director. Provides therapeutic and relaxation massage treatments to staff, physicians, visitors, guests and other clients. The Clinical Massage Therapist II is also qualified to provide massage treatments to patients.

Performs assessment of the type of massage treatment appropriate for recipient by:
  • Coordinating massage schedule and setup in advance of massage session(s) to optimize privacy and quiet for the massage environment.
  • Conducting pre-massage interview to assess recipient needs and any special precautions or contraindications related to physical condition and to determine appropriate massage modality.
  • Obtaining written parental consent prior to providing massage treatment to minor.
  • Administering pre and post massage symptom evaluations as program requires.

Provides therapeutic and relaxation massage treatments to produce the following outcomes:
  • Reducing muscle tension and pain.
  • Reducing stress, anxiety and depression.
  • Improving circulation and joint flexibility.
  • Promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being.
  • Reducing sleeplessness, fatigue or nausea.

Performs follow-up to therapeutic massage treatments by:
  • Providing appropriate recommendations for self-care to recipient, within the customary scope of practice for a certified massage therapist (e.g., therapist will not recommend medications, herbal/botanical remedies or energy work for medical issues).
  • Documenting massage and recommendations as required by department policy and procedures.
  • Obtaining and maintaining a file of consent forms (if required by department).

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an accredited massage therapy certificate program requiring a minimum 500 hours instruction plus supervised clinical hours. One year (or 800 hours) professional massage experience, preferably in healthcare facility (e.g., hospital, hospice, sports clinic or extended care facility) required. Certification by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), and membership with the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) or equivalent association. Current St. Joseph County Health Department Massage Therapist permit and maintenance of same.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Requires technical knowledge and expertise necessary to provide therapeutic and relaxation massage treatments to recipients.
  • Requires strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology in order to perform and communicate massage assessments and treatments with recipients.
  • Requires current CPR certification or arrangements to be certified within the first three months of employment.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a diverse group of massage recipients in a professional, courteous, friendly and sincere manner.

Working Conditions
  • Massages are provided in a quiet space that varies by location/unit.
  • Chair massages are occasionally in public and/or non-quiet areas such as visitor waiting rooms, staff lounges.
  • Miscellaneous supplies such as face cradle covers, massage lotion and hand sanitizer are provided by Memorial.
  • Therapist provides appropriate relaxation music/equipment according to personal preference.
  • Requires the ability to work flexible hours.
