What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Executive System Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Executive System Safety Engineer, you need deep expertise in system safety engineering principles, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by an engineering degree and extensive experience in safety-critical industries. Familiarity with safety analysis tools (such as FMEA, FTA, and hazard log software) and certifications like Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent are commonly required. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for influencing teams and stakeholders. These competencies are crucial to ensuring organizational safety objectives are met, regulatory standards are upheld, and complex engineering systems operate reliably.

How does an Executive System Safety Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Executive System Safety Engineers play a pivotal role in coordinating safety efforts across multidisciplinary teams, including design, operations, and quality assurance. They often facilitate regular meetings to ensure all departments are aligned on safety requirements and risk mitigation strategies. These engineers also review and provide feedback on technical documents, lead safety assessments, and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Effective collaboration ensures that safety is integrated into every phase of the project, from conception through deployment.

What does an Executive System Safety Engineer do?

An Executive System Safety Engineer is responsible for overseeing and managing the safety aspects of complex systems within an organization, often in industries such as aerospace, defense, or transportation. Primary Responsibilities

Leidos' Defense is seeking a System Safety Engineer to join a matrixed organization of systems engineers, model-based systems engineers, and specialty systems engineers. This System Safety Engineer will support between 1 and 3 efforts simultaneously, which they will need to autonomously balance throughout their 40-hour workweek. These efforts will be for a variety of applications, from physics-based modeling & simulation to hardware development, and will involve both classified and unclassified work. The System Safety Engineer will need to work independently on these efforts, defining their own tasking derived from customer needs and contractual documents. Each effort will require different specific safety artifacts, but broadly the System Safety Engineer will perform system safety analysis tasks in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and customer program requirements. This position does not necessarily require a System Safety Subject Matter Expert, but the role does minimally require experience working independently on projects/programs, some systems engineering exposure, and the ability to communicate with non-System Safety Engineering stakeholders who are less familiar with safety approaches.

The System Safety Engineer will work in a matrixed organization, which supports multiple programs at once in a variety of engineering fields with all different team environments. When the efforts end, the System Safety Engineer will have the opportunity to support a different program in the matrixed engineering portfolio. A candidate with experience in other engineering areas such as Systems Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Risk Management, and Reliability Analysis will be treated preferentially. Success in this organization often leads to leadership positions in System Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT).
