What is executive protection security?

Executive protection security refers to specialized security services designed to ensure the safety of high-profile individuals such as corporate executives, celebrities, politicians, or other persons at risk. These services often include personal bodyguards, secure transportation, advance security planning, and risk assessments. The goal is to prevent threats like kidnapping, harassment, or physical harm through proactive measures and professional vigilance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive protection security professional?

To thrive as an Executive Protection Security professional, you need expertise in risk assessment, threat analysis, emergency response, and often a background in law enforcement or military service. Familiarity with surveillance equipment, defensive driving, security protocols, and certifications like Certified Protection Professional (CPP) are typically required. Exceptional situational awareness, discretion, and strong communication skills set top professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring the safety and privacy of clients in high-risk environments.

What are the common challenges faced by executive protection security professionals during international assignments?

Executive Protection Security professionals often encounter unique challenges during international assignments, such as navigating unfamiliar legal systems, language barriers, and varying cultural norms regarding privacy and security. Additionally, logistical hurdles like coordinating secure transportation and adapting to different communication infrastructures can arise. Building local contacts and conducting thorough risk assessments are essential to ensure the principal’s safety. Teamwork and adaptability are crucial, as roles and responsibilities may shift depending on the local environment and specific threats.

Job description

Control Risks is seeking an Executive Security Driver to support a major global life sciences client in the Boston / Cambridge area. The successful candidate will serve as a junior executive protection agent with strong secure transportation and protective driving capability in support of the client's Massachusetts-based Chief Executive Officer.
This is not a chauffeur-only position. The Executive Security Driver will operate as an armed executive protection professional who also provides secure transportation. The role requires someone who understands the protective mission, can support advance work and movement planning, and can contribute meaningfully to a small executive protection team.
The Executive Security Driver will work under the direction of the Senior Executive Protection Manager and alongside the Executive Protection Agent and Protective Intelligence Analyst. The ideal candidate will bring executive protection experience, sound judgment, formal protective driving training, strong situational awareness, and the maturity to operate discreetly in a low-profile corporate environment.
  • Provide secure, discreet and professional transportation for the principal and approved executives as required.
  • Operate as an executive protection resource who supports the broader protective mission, not as a stand-alone driver or chauffeur.
  • Support route planning, route reconnaissance, movement planning and contingency planning in coordination with the Senior Executive Protection Manager.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle readiness, cleanliness, equipment status, emergency supplies and communications capability.
  • Support arrivals, departures, airport movements, site visits, meetings, events and other executive movements.
  • Provide ground-level advance support, observation and communication during movements and site activity.
  • Support the Senior Executive Protection Manager and Executive Protection Agent with advance work, site surveys, event support and local protective requirements.
  • Maintain a low-profile protective posture that supports the principal's productivity, privacy and business objectives.
  • Monitor traffic, route conditions, environmental concerns and potential security issues affecting movements.
  • Remain prepared to respond to security incidents, medical emergencies, vehicle issues, travel disruptions or other situations requiring immediate action.
  • Support other executives, events or local protective requirements when CEO driving demand is lower and schedule permits.
  • Participate in recurring training, firearms qualification, protective driving refreshers, medical refreshers, scenario-based team training and after-action reviews.
  • Maintain all required licenses, certifications and professional standards associated with the role.
  • Maintain confidentiality, discretion and professionalism at all times.

Requirements
  • Associate's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and relevant professional experience.
  • 2+ years of executive protection, corporate executive protection, close protection or protective operations experience supporting senior executives or high-profile principals.
  • Prior experience operating as part of an executive protection team, not solely as a driver or chauffeur.
  • Successful completion of an industry-recognized executive protection or close protection course through a reputable government, law enforcement, military or private training provider.
  • Successful completion of accredited protective driving, defensive driving, evasive driving, high-risk driving or comparable secure transportation training.
  • Demonstrated experience with secure transportation, route planning, airport movements, hotel movements, executive movements, vehicle readiness and contingency planning.
  • Prior military or law enforcement experience is valued, particularly where it supports LEOSA-compatible credentials and lawful nationwide carry; however, candidates must demonstrate the ability to operate effectively in a low-profile corporate executive protection environment.
  • Experience supporting senior executives in a corporate environment preferred.
  • Ability to support the broader protective mission beyond the vehicle, including advance work, observation, communications, movement support and event support.
  • Strong situational awareness, sound judgment and ability to make calm decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to operate effectively as the junior member of a small executive protection team.
  • Ability to balance security, discretion, service and executive productivity.

Additional requirements
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, all applicable Massachusetts licensing and firearms credentials required to perform armed executive protection duties.
  • LEOSA-compatible credentials preferred.
  • Certification in CPR, AED, and first aid, or ability to obtain before deployment.
  • Valid US driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Valid US passport or ability to obtain one.
  • Ability to support occasional evenings, weekends, travel and schedule changes based on the principal's requirements.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, discretion and professional judgment.
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the role, including extended sitting, standing, walking, driving, travel and response to dynamic situations.
  • Must be able to operate in indoor, outdoor and inclement-weather environments as required.
  • Must be able to safely perform daytime and nighttime driving duties with natural or corrected vision sufficient to meet role requirements.

Benefits
  • Control Risks offers a competitively positioned compensation and benefits package that is transparent and summarized in the full job offer.
  • We operate a discretionary bonus scheme that incentivizes, and rewards individuals based on company and individual performance.
  • Control Risks supports hybrid working arrangements, wherever possible, that emphasize the value of in-person time together - in the office and with our clients - while continuing to support flexible and remote working.

  • Medical Benefits, Prescription Benefits, FSA, Dental Benefits, Vision Benefits, Life and AD&D, Voluntary Life and AD&D, Disability Benefits, Voluntary Benefits, 401 (K) Retirement, Nationwide Pet Insurance, Employee Assistance Program.
