Y-Risk, as an underwriting company of The Hartford, partners with brokers to provide robust insurance solutions for our clients. We have proudly built a company operating on the leading edge of the insurance industry where we expertly merge the fundamentals of insurance with the fast-paced world of the tech-enabled innovation.

We are establishing an underwriting team in the Bay Area of California, in proximity to the San Francisco insurance community and the investment & technology resources in Silicon Valley. We are building on the existing Y-Risk brand as an industry leader in underwriting the innovators: delivering client centric solutions as new business models emerge. This strategic move will align with Y-Risk's mandate of "insuring tomorrow's economy" by positioning the company at the forefront of underwriting emerging technologies. This team will leverage The Hartford's deep institutional knowledge and resources through collaboration and transparency by focusing on the intersection of underwriting, data science, risk finance, risk engineering, technology, and claims.

Our team takes a nimble and creative approach to underwriting. We take the time to get to know and understand each client's business and insurance goals and use their data and exposure profile to put the best possible coverage in place. We can appropriately price risk and make necessary adjustments based on active data analysis. At Y-Risk, we also understand the need for speed. Quick turnaround in underwriting and structuring insurance programs is one of our top priorities.In doing this, we value working closely with our customers and their brokers to communicate the benefits of our products.

We are seeking business line underwriters with expertise in strategic investments and a deep passion for emerging technologies. Our Underwriters will monitor and respond to private equity investment and technological trends as they are being developed, while growing Y-Risk business and will report to the Managing Director. This team will deliver underwriting solution expertise and 360 perspectives on risk to clients and producers; and create forward-thinking insurance products that meet the needs of tomorrow's economy.

Responsibilities include:

Solution Expertise and Innovation:

  • Identify, target, and solicit specific emerging technologies and clients.
  • Seek opportunities to underwrite the business by direct solicitation to agents, brokers, and clients based on underwriting & risk analysis expertise.
  • Conduct exposure & pricing-based Research & Development - organizing and categorizing exposures to identify if new underwriting & pricing methodologies are required, or if "traditional" products, pricing, and appetite apply.

Financial & Strategic Investment:

  • Strategic planning and market analysis development, focused on investment trends and "following the money."
  • Work closely with The Hartford's deep institutional knowledge base and resources to approach and evaluate the businesses and technologies that will make up tomorrow's economy.
  • Close collaboration with the Director of Partnerships & Ecosystems, housed in the Y-Risk Innovation Labs, and the Emerging Technology Study Group to:
    • actively engage with the local tech community
    • participate in technology related industry events
    • foster partnerships with leading tech companies

Underwriting:

  • Reviews, evaluates, quotes, binds & issues new business and assigned renewals.
  • Applies any applicable underwriting guidelines.
  • Properly documents customer file in accordance with regulatory and underwriting standards.
  • Establishes & maintains quality submission pipeline.
  • Manages book of business to greater than $5MM in premium within 24 months
  • Completes assigned projects per Project Tracker document.

Agency Management:

  • Maintains professional relationship provide excellent account management with assigned brokers.
  • Determines & executes strategy to increase quality submissions.
  • Works with brokers to positively influence individual submission/policy outcome.
  • Retains 90%+ of renewal book.
  • Travels as appropriate for book management & relationship building, (approximately once per month averaging 3-5 days per visit)

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of P&C carrier business lines underwriting experience is preferred; well versed in commercial Auto and GL a plus. Open to considering someone with P&C carrier/broker/agent expertise in the Sharing/Shared & On-Demand Economy industry.
  • Capable of underwriting highly complex business and will require limited support from senior management and infrequent referral activity to complete quotes, thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and governance.
  • Able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Innovative with ability to translate emerging technology opportunities to successfully underwrite business.
  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.
  • Executive presence and proven presentation abilities.
  • Stellar sales and negotiation skills.
  • Highly collaborative with strong relationship building skills.
  • Able to travel.
  • This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in the Downtown San Francisco office / in market 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$96,400 - $180,000

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
