What is an Executive Full Stack Software Engineer?

Executive Full Stack Software Engineers are highly experienced professionals who possess expertise in both front-end and back-end software development while also having leadership or management responsibilities. They contribute to the architectural design, development, and deployment of applications, and often oversee technical strategy and team direction. These engineers bridge the gap between technical execution and business objectives, making technical decisions that align with organizational goals. Their role requires strong coding skills, a deep understanding of software systems, and the ability to lead and mentor other engineers.

How does an Executive Full Stack Software Engineer balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

As an Executive Full Stack Software Engineer, you'll often split your time between hands-on technical work and leading teams or projects. This means you may spend part of your day architecting solutions or reviewing code, but you'll also be involved in strategy meetings, mentoring junior engineers, and collaborating with stakeholders from other departments. Balancing these duties requires strong time management, excellent communication skills, and the ability to delegate effectively. Many in this role find success by setting clear priorities, leveraging agile methodologies, and maintaining close collaboration with both technical and non-technical team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Executive Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Executive Full Stack Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in both front-end and back-end development, advanced knowledge of multiple programming languages, and a track record of technical leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with modern frameworks (such as React, Angular, Node.js), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), DevOps tools, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valuable. Strong communication, project management, and strategic decision-making skills help you bridge technical teams and business stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for delivering robust solutions, leading innovation, and aligning technology initiatives with organizational goals.

Job Title: Full-Stack Software Engineer

Team: Engineering

Location: Onsite-Santa Monica, CA

Employment Type: Full-time, Salary, Exempt

Reports To: Engineering Lead

About Plug

Plug is an automotive fintech startup building the marketplace for electric vehicles. Consumers, dealers, and commercial partners trade in, sell, and auction used EVs through a platform built exclusively for electric, with nothing adapted from legacy automotive.

Consumers can get an instant cash offer in minutes, backed by data-driven pricing, battery state-of-health analysis, with pickup, payment, and title transfer handled end-to-end. Franchise and independent dealers across the United States bid in real time on inventory sourced directly from these consumers, dealers, and commercial partners. The result is a single platform that gives sellers a fast, fair exit and gives dealers a dedicated channel for sourcing used EV inventory.

Founded in 2023 and led by former Tesla executives, Plug has facilitated $100M in EV sales since launch and is backed by a $20M Series A from Lightspeed Venture Partners. We're building the most AI-native startup team in Los Angeles, full of operators, engineers, and ML researchers laying the transaction rails for the used EV market's exponential growth.

Why Plug
  • You’ll own a piece of the biggest infrastructure opportunity in automotive.

  • You’ll work on a platform built exclusively for EVs, with nothing adapted from legacy automotive.

  • You’ll be part of an AI-native company. We’re rethinking how work gets done at a fundamental level.

  • You’ll work directly with operators who have scaled multi-billion dollar businesses in automotive, EV, and marketplaces.

  • You’ll have real ownership, high autonomy, and a direct line to company outcomes.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to join our growing team! A full-stack software engineer who will report to our engineering lead, and who will own features and components within our products - working closely with senior software engineers (SSEs) on scope, architecture, and cross-system tradeoffs. We’re building systems like AI-powered pricing intelligence, real-time connectivity to vehicle manufacturer APIs, auction application, and data pipelines that aggregate EV-specific information from dozens of sources - all to make the wholesale EV market faster, smarter, and more transparent.

As a member of the team you’ll help build the technical and product foundation for our growing business, with direct mentorship from senior engineers as you grow into more ownership. We’re building a culture that cares about collaboration, encourages intellectual honesty, celebrates technical excellence, and is driven by careful attention to detail and planning for the future. We believe diversity of perspective and experience are key to building great technology and a thriving team. Sounds cool? Let’s work together.

What You’ll Do
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute your voice in product design sessions, architecture discussions, and code reviews.

  • Design, implement, test, debug, and document work on new and existing software features, ensuring they meet business, quality, and operational needs.

  • Take ownership of features, with support from SSEs on architecture or cross-system tradeoffs, understanding the ultimate goal and evaluating effort and priority in an agile environment.

  • Use agentic coding tools to write clear, efficient, and maintainable code, growing your judgment on flexibility and scalability with guidance from senior engineers.

  • Contribute to team productivity and process improvements.

  • Use and integrate APIs to connect Plug with 3rd party platforms.

  • Contribute to code review and pairing, and reach out to SSEs to spark good technical discussions - including how you use AI tools.

  • Be an integral part of a close team of developers; this is an opportunity to grow quickly with direct mentorship from senior engineers as the team scales.

What You’ll Bring
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing and delivering production applications.

  • Solid proficiency in TypeScript across the full stack - backend, frontend, relational databases, and API/webhook integrations.

  • Experience deploying and operating cloud-hosted applications; comfort with CI/CD pipelines and observability tooling, with interest in infrastructure-as-code (we use Terraform) and feature flag systems.

  • Comfortable working in agent-first development workflows - defining clear acceptance criteria and reviewing AI-generated output with a high quality bar.

  • A strong engineering quality bar - writing tests, participating in code reviews, and producing code that is readable by both humans and AI agents.

  • Track record of owning work end-to-end: scoping, shipping, and measuring impact, with growing autonomy.

  • Startup or fast-paced team experience is a plus.

  • Authorized to work in the US for any employer.

  • Prior experience in automotive or EV systems is a plus.
